UIC BSN applicants for fall 2012

U.S.A. Illinois

Published

hi guys

Jan 15th has passed and now its time for the wait, I am pretty nervous because UIC is my number one choice and I would really love to start this BSN program in the fall. Its one of the best schools out there for nursing not only in the state, but in the entire US. Their grad programs are ranked among the best. So I am sure you guys want it just as bad as I do. Now its just time to wait till late April to find out whats going to happen.

who has applied to this program? and are you guys pretty nervous about this whole process? what do you guys think they are looking for in an applicant? what do you think is the deciding factor outside of just total package? is it GPA, medical experiance, essays, letters of reccomendation, etc..????

It was a pretty long application process so I know you guys are dedicated and put the time in. So lets hope for the best, feel free to join this thread at anytime.

Hi futureglobalnurse21,

Good luck on your application! I am a pre-nursing student at UIC. I submitted my application for fall 2012 also. recently, I attended an information session about the process given by a gentleman on the board of admissions. He explained that the application process is split between 33% for grades 33% for essays and 33% for recommendation letters and volunteering or working in a medical atmosphere. He said that the highest GPA they admitted was 3.7 or higher, however they did accept some as low as 2.75. He explained that UIC wants people who are not only great academically, but can also interact with patients and do the job of a nurse well, which is why some 2 point GPAs get in the program. In the essays they look for how well your essays are structured, your vocabulary and how concise. He said that the recommendations hold a great weight and if you are doing something in the medical field, such as CNA/LPN work, or anything with patient interaction is a plus. Mainly because they have over the years found that sometimes once people get in the program, they don't like to touch people who are not well groomed, or may smell bad ect. and drop out the class. They do receive about 900 applications. at least 500 will not meet the requirement and out of the 400 left the 96 are chosen. WOOOOWW! The 3 minimum sciences classes they really look at if all 5 are not completed is the Kinesiology one, general chem and survey of organic bio chem. He did say that if those classes are not the the three you have it MAY NOT affect your application. It is beyond competitive. Another nursing advisor told me that most people have a better chance at getting into heaven as Satan's child than into the program. From the information session it seems they are looking for a well rounded group of individuals which is why the GPA is across the board. If you have some medical or volunteer experience though I think it will help a lot. Ive only applied to 2 schools. My GPA is 3.5 and I work for an HIV/AIDS research clinic, my essays are very well written and rec letters are very strong, yet I'm still nervous! I Look at it like this the worst thing that could happen is that I wont get in. The typical schedule are classes on Mon, Wed, Fri. SimLab on Tuesday and clinical site on Thurs. There is no way that you can work during the two years in the program. They have 96 percent passing rate on the nclex and he said that the other 4 percent are usually students who have decided not to take it at all. If I can help answer anything else for you just let me know. GOOD LUCK!

thank you so so so much for your very detailed written response. you know, I feel like with my situation, my GPA is very high, my letters of recommendation and work experience are good but the only thing with me that I am worried about is the essays, my grammar is not too great but honestly its not horrible either, you can read it and understand it fully but you might think it could have been said a bit better, but honestly the content is great, i have had lots of crazy life experiences and i talked about many of them in the essays. Did they just stress the grammar and how well it was written or both with actually good content in essays?? because you can have the best grammar in the world but with out life experiences and etc.. i would imagine one would have a hard time writing it you know. wow. so over 500 get tossed out? did he say what were some of the reasons for this????!!! I hope mine is not one to get tossed out, I turned in everything with the letters of rec by jan 13 and got the conformation for letters of rec and the transcripts and etc so i hope im good

you know someone on this thread said over 700 people applied, did it reach 900. did they have an exact number or were they just saying past numbers? and last question, did they say when in april we will find out, some threads here in the past, people found out by april 11, some by april 21

one more thing

did you hear about early admissions to UIC school of nursing?

usually people who apply in October or November recieve their acceptance by december, I think they take some of the 96 at that time, did he mention this or no? if they do take people. I hope they did not take like 40 or something lol.

I know years in the past they had this but i am not sure if they have this now

btw beyondbeautiful, you have a great mentality about getting in or not getting in. I want to say thanks for taking time out to reply to this

hey! i asked the admission lady at UIC and she said there is no early admission to UIC anymore.

I asked the admission, too, that they didn't have early admission. I'm very stressful about the result. I don't want to wait until next year to reapply again if I can not get in.

no early admission?? nice! this is good because if there was early admission, than there would only be like 50 seats left

Hello again!

He said Typically 900 aps come through for the Chicago site alone. His name is Rob. I forgot his last name. He may be the one who sends you your acceptance email :). As far as essays they want you to use as less words as possible. Yes the content is important and being brief is important. I'm Sure if your content is well you will be fine. They did not do early admission and are reviewing applications now. response emails will be sent out mid to late April. They admit off the wait list up to two weeks after class has already began if that is a situation you come across. Do not worry about the time you submitted. The review process only begins after the deadline so everyone gets a fair chance. As far as those initially disqualified He did not mention why. I am assuming that it could be that some have not met the 2.75 GPA, or have recommendation letters that are not truly a recommendation. Realize that even if some applicants do not meet the minimum requirements they may still apply and hope to fall in the cracks, so to speak. Don't worry though, Future. You will be fine. As long as you are confident in your application and the grades you have, don't stress. You have applied other places, right? Also UIC does accept about 90 percent of their own students first and then consider outside applicants. So you really just can't tell what is going to happen.

hey hey

Yes I have applied to one more school. I am very confident in my grades and recommendation and content in my essays, as far as the grammar. thats the only thing I am afraid of. I know they look at the applicant as a total package so i hope they dont get stuck on grammar in my essays because I am very very confident in everything else. Did you apply to other schools? you said 90 percent of their own ?? I heard they take 50 percent of their class from transfer students.. I know someone who told me they loveeee transfer students.. I dont know if thats true, but she said that more than half of her class came from a community college or other schools. Its crazy because I heard midish april people will know the decision. like somewhere between april 11 to 18. that is soooo close. and does it seem like march is dragging for you or what?? Do you think they look at people who speak another language as a plus? or they dont look at that?

thanks for your posts..

Hi guys! I try to think positive and don't worry so much about the possible results. It seems too far to wait and I hate waiting and waiting in this moment. Btw I applied to one more school, too. Good Luck guys!! ^__^

Hi futureglobalnurse21,

They have 96 percent passing rate on the nclex and he said that the other 4 percent are usually students who have decided not to take it at all.

According to the state stats, the UIC nclex passing rate for BSN is less than 90%. There is another thread on this topic here: https://allnurses.com/il-nursing-programs/2011-nclex-pass-668847.html

This is really interesting, UIC said 96 percent, and you want to know whats funny, saint xavier said theirs was 100 percent or the last 7 years... its all a business, they tell you we want good nurses so gpa does not matter, well. matter of fact is it does because at the end of the day they want people who can pass the boards! and that's what determines how good the school is

Also, is a college allowed to lie about their stats?? it seems like every school is
