Hi All,

I am sort of new here and needed some advice. I am finishing semester three out of 5 for nursing, and just found out I am pregnant. My husband and I are thrilled, but this was a total surprise. My second session summer class is OB/Maternity, and it is two 12 hour clinicals weekly plus the regular class twice a week. I am finishing up pediatrics currently, which is challenging because we are dealing with a lot of D.S., FAS, and M.R. children.

I just want to talk to other nursing students who have made it through pregnant. I will have to take off this spring when I am due, but I am terrified about taking Med Surg 2 and OB while going through the worst of my morning sickness (trust me, I went through h-ell with my 4 year old ds). Any advice? Honesty is welcome...If you guys think I am going to pass out during such long shifts, what should I do? I am in good health otherwise, but I am also 33 years-old. I am thinking this pregnancy might be a bit harder.

I found out I was pregnant 2 weeks after I got accepted into our nursing program! (Now my daughter is 19 months.) Though my clinicals were different being only once a week, but still 12hours and I had 3 days of classes I was able to get it done. It really wasn't that much of a pain, I just had to get really good shoes to wear. I wasn't due until after finals and she ended up coming 5 weeks early so I missed 2 weeks of school because she was in the NICU for 8 days, but my instructors worked with me and I was able to make everything up that I missed (except the final which I took on time) during the break, including clinical hours. I went right back the next semester and just graduated in May, so I think you can do it!

I am going to move this to the general nursing forums so you can get better feedback from current nursing students :)

I just graduated last month. We have fertility issues, so it took 5 years to get pregnant with my 1st and 15 months for our 2nd. We knew we wanted another baby eventually but planned on waiting until I was working for at least 6-12 months before even beginning to try. Well without trying or being on clomid, I got pregnant and I'm due in October! So it wasn't too bad for me because I was almost done with school and was barely showing by graduation. And I have easy pregnancies....no morning sickness or nothing, so that wasn't an issue. So I imagine for you it'll be harder because of being sick and whatnot. Just eat what you can, stay hydrated.....I know that's hard during clinicals. Rest when possible too. I wish you luck, you'll get through it! :)

we've had a couple pregnancies in my class. so far, they've been timed just right to coincide with breaks, but the teachers have all been very accommodating as far as letting the students make up classes or clinicals. some have even done extra clinicals ahead of time, just in case they weren't able to finish out the semester.

a few had to miss a couple days due to morning sickness, etc., but they all got through it. during clinicals, they just took breaks to sit down if needed. people were pretty understanding. just talk with your teachers and keep them posted on how you are feeling or if you need any help.
