UF traditional BSN (fall) 2016

Published

Hello everyone,

I am currently applying for the traditional BSN program for fall 2016 at US (couldn't find a thread for the traditional program so decided to make one)

I would like to know from people who was recently accepted into the program, what their GPA was, their prerequisites, grades? I currently am finishing my AA in nursing at Santa Fe College and I am also planning on applying here as well (RN program). But my main priority would be UF because I would go straight into the the bachelor program.

Today I went to UF and I asked one of the secretaries what the odds were and she told me that in the last few years, only people with GPAs of 3.8 and up are the ones being admitted into the program. This was so depressing as my GPA (s) are the following:

SF CUMULATIVE3.52

ALL COLLEGE CUM 3.61

AA SF DEG CUM 3.45

AA COLLEGE CUM3.45

(I don't know which GPA is the one they are considering for the application)

I don't know if my expectations are realistic or not. I feel so frustrated. I am even taking my last pre-requisite (microbiology) and I don't know which GPA i'll be having by the end of this semester (my last one). Additionally to this, I've been volunteering at Shands hospital for the past 2 years, I got a recommendation letter from them and one from an Anatomy professor (it seems like they don't take this into consideration either).

Also, what other nursing schools do you believe are good and could take me into consideration? the other thing is that I am married and have a family, I cannot just move away from Gainesville to study because of this. My options are very limited.

Thanks in advance for all the help.

I am a current UF student who also applied for the BSN 2016 program.

I have a lot of friends who are in the Nursing program right now and can tell you some info :)

The program at UF is strictly based on your prerequisite GPA, and the average is a 3.8

They have stressed at many of the meetings that extracurriculars/awards/references are all optional on the application, so it shows how important GPA is. But this is different for every individual, if someone is riding borderline with a 3.65 they may look at their extracurriculars and volunteer hours.

Because it is such a competitive undergraduate program (and the best in the state), students who are enrolled at UF get first priority and it's rare they accept transfers.

Santa Fe is still a great school, and has an awesome Nursing program. In the end you'll be an RN, so don't be discouraged. I wish you the best of luck :)

Thank you very much, beachygator. I applied regardless of that because 'who never knows?'. I hope I get good news from UF. I am also planning on applying for Santa Fe but since they changed the point system, I might have to get a CNA certificate and re-apply for spring next year. If they don't change it again, I should be able to almost max out the points for it. Thanks once again for the best wishes and, who knows, I might get in.. [emoji120]🏻[emoji4]

Hi beachygator! I just saw this thread and since you've been to a couple of the meetings, I thought I could ask you a couple of questions.

I'm applying as a transfer and my GPA is 3.92. I know that the GPA is the first thing that they consider. After looking at the GPA, what is the next important thing? Is it the essay or experience (like volunteering/working)?

Of course, never lose hope because there's always a possibility :)

Hi! During the meetings, Ken, (Nursing Advisor at UF) would say how they view each applicant differently. Most importantly is GPA, and its always great to include extracurriculars/volunteering but that was totally optional on the application.

They say a student's GPA is a future indicator of how well they'll do in UF's program. UF's courses are much harder than typical universities and thats why there isn't an entrance exam to apply for this program (like the TEAS Test)!

You've got a great GPA!! It never hurts to apply to other schools because I know that for this program, native UF students are priority. It's rare for transfers to be accepted, MAYBE 1 or 2 transfers are accepted out of all the transfer applicants because it's so competitive and the #1 Nursing Program in Florida. But do not be discouraged because you could be that one transfer student that is accepted!!! Best of luck and hope to see you in the program next year :)

Thanks for responding! For the past few years, I've heard and read that they accept 5 transfers. So I thought it was a set number of transfers that they accept each year. But thanks for the encouragement, I really appreciate it :) Have they given you guys a set date of when they are going to send out the acceptance letters? Or is it by email this year?

No, it's never a set number of transfers. It depends on how strong the application pool is, and apparently it gets stronger every year.... which isn't good for me either lol. My friend thats a Junior in the nursing program said there was only 1 transfer student in her class. But i know someone who's a Senior and she said she's got like 3 or 4!

Ken said they would come out around June (there is never a set date bc they send the emails out 1 by 1 and take their time) (I'm assuming mid to late June like it always is)

I believe they send emails! That's what my friend got last year when she found out she got in :)

OH WOW!!! That's crazy that there's only 1 out of like 130. So scary that they send it out 1 by 1, it makes us more anxious as each person finds out they got in. But I guess we'll see! Have you applied anywhere else?

I know right!! So some people may get their acceptance one day, and others may wait another day or two. Waiting is the worst part!

No I haven't applied to other schools, I figured that if I didn't get in I could do the accelerated program.

Plus i already signed my apartment lease for next year, so no going back!! Lol

Where are you transferring from?

I'm transferring from UNF!

Awesome! I have friends who go there and applied for its nursing program. Is UF or UNF your first choice?
