UCSF New Grad Program 2023 Questions

Nurses Career Support

Updated:   Published

Hello all,

I am at the last semester of the ABSN program at Samuel Merritt. I'm expecting to graduate in early Jan and plan to take the NCLEX early Feb and no later than late Feb. I would like to know the timeline for applying to UCSF's nursing new grad Spring program 2023. Any past experiences with UCSF to share will be greatly appreciated.

once you accepted the interview invite, did the request disappear for anyone?I used my Hotmail/outlook email btw:/

Hey guys!

I never received an invite so I took it upon myself to email (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME). She said my application was considered incomplete because I "didn't attach the Diversity Statement Response to your application.”

so for those who also didn't receive an invite who feel qualified LOL, that's probably why!
Can anyone remind me what that diversity statement response looked like? I've done so many applications I'm starting to forget. And I clearly forgot to attach it so I'm very mad at myself because this was my dream job! Ugh!

hey I had this copied on my notes directly from the application. Hope it helps. I think the diversity statement is a newer addition to the application, my sister applied to this program's last cohort and did not have to do the diversity statement.

Application Instructions

Create a profile and upload your resume.

Applicants will be asked screening questions regarding eligibility requirements. Be sure to review each question and answer appropriately.

Once you have submitted your responses, you will not be able to change them.

Applicants are required to include a Cover Letter with their application. In your Cover Letter, rank your top three specialty choices and why you want to work at UCSF.

Applicants will be required to submit a Diversity Statement. **This should be uploaded as one document along with your Cover Letter. There is no separate section to upload your Diversity Statement.

Prompt for Diversity Statement

UCSF is a diverse community made of people with many skills and talents. We seek candidates whose work experience or community service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Diversity and Excellence – also known as our PRIDE values.

In alignment with our PRIDE values, UCSF is committed to equity – both in how we deliver care as well as within our workforce. We are committed to building a broadly diverse community, nurturing a culture that is welcoming and supportive, and engaging diverse ideas for the provision of culturally competent education, discovery, and patient care.

Describe any experience or background that has made you aware of inequities and challenges faced by historically underrepresented or economically disadvantaged groups.  If selected for a nursing position at UCSF, how will this experience or background help you contribute to UCSF's commitment to increasing diversity and promoting a culture of equal opportunity?

"Reminders to address each bullet point listed below:

Clearly rank your top three specialty preferences

Include your response to the Diversity Statement in the same attachment as your Cover Letter – see prompt for Diversity statement above

Do not include any personal information or photos on your resume or Cover Letter and do not upload any letters of recommendation"

Thank you so much!
I totally remember seeing that but must have completely forgot about it. So frustrated with myself! I may type it up real quick and beg the recruiter to consider my application. How long was your statement? A few paragraphs?

Mine was about half a page (~250 words) and most people I know also had theirs around that length! Good luck!!

NP! Mine was a little less than a page long. Best of luck! Rooting for you!

Hi,

How are you all preparing for the interview for UCSF?

I'm just a bit nervous about the fact that the interview is only 1-2 Qs and only 15 minutes for 3 candidates. Is it enough time for the recruiters to find out if they like the applicants or not ...

Hey All,

Not sure if this is helpful or not, but I applied to UCSF in the fall (even though I knew I wouldn't have my CA license in time) so I did one of these rapid fire 15 minute interviews back in August. I had not prepared nearly enough and it didn't go great. I was applying again but just accepted a job at LPCH-Stanford, so withdrew my application from UCSF (a touch bittersweet bc I live in SF, but still very excited!).

Anyway, the interview that time was 4 candidates and only 2 questions. They asked us each to introduce ourselves, including why we wanted to be a UCSF nurse and gave us ONE minute to answer that. As I recall they literally had a countdown clock running on the Zoom for us to see. Then they asked a single behavioral question and gave us two minutes. For my group it was "Tell us about a time you went above and beyond with a patient or in a previous career experience." We all answered the same question. They were very serious about the two minutes.

It may have been covered elsewhere, but I'd try to prepare for behavioral style questions and practice to keep your answers to two minutes. Stanford Adult Hospital gave a great webinar about preparing for these types of interviews that I highly recommend you look at if this is your first time doing this kind of interview (or even if it's not!)

I hope this is helpful. Good luck everyone!!

Thank you so much for this! Congrats on the Stanford job!

Hi! I wanted to ask if you sent her an individual email or replied to the rejection email she sent? My application is complete so I am unsure why I didn't get an interview invite. The only thing I can think of is that I forgot to indicate my top 3 specialties ? even so I uploaded the updated cover letter and on my profile before the application closed. I wanted to see if she could maybe give me a chance as well. Thanks in advance!

Yes I sent her an individual email at: (MODERATOR EDIT OF EMAIL)

She responded really quick. Unfortunately in my case she said she can't help me at the point and my application has been rejected. My application also said "complete" but it wasn't. I recommend emailing her so that you at least get an explanation. Pretty sure all applicants got a first round interview which would explain why I did not since I forgot to include my diversity statement. I hope this helps!
