2013 UCSF MEPN Applicants

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to apply for the 2013 cycle of MEPN at UCSF (application date would be September 1 of this year). I'll be applying for psych/mental health, and it will be my first time applying to this program. I was wondering if anyone else is out there who is applying for the 2013 cycle. I'm hoping we could share encouragement and tips!

Also, there's a thread for 2012 applicants- definitely check that out too. :)

Hello! I will also be applying this upcoming cycle to the Pediatrics track.

Can anyone who went to the information sessions or any of you students who are in the program now offer some insight as to who we should choose for letter of recs? I see on the website it says individuals who "are acquainted with the applicant's work or community experience." Does this mean letters from those familiar with our work or volunteer experience are preferred over academic references?

Any help/advice would be much appreciated. Thanks and good luck everyone!

It's open! The 9th, just as they said. Off we go. Very exciting! We should all stay in touch. If the system is like last year's, we may need to help each other along. :)

leeezy, I'll let someone else answer your question; I'm not sure.

I was so excited to see the application open! Question: I don't see the specialty for nurse-midwifery/women's health NP, am I missing something? :(

Specializes in Midwifery/Women's Health.

I'm devastated to announce, the nurse-midwifery/women's health NP specialty is no longer offered at UCSF :((((

Wait, how did you find that out? My emails to [email protected] are bouncing because the inbox is full and no one else I've emailed about this has responded. The CNM/WHNP speciality is all over the website and promo materials and they talked about it in depth at the info session I went to in February. Must have been a recent decision? I'm in a state of shock...

Are you two sure? I vaguely recall them saying something in the May info session about combining specialties -- maybe Family Nurse Practitioner with midwifery (??). I didn't pay attention because it's not my interest. I would try a phone call & keep trying the email.

I called into the nursing office today and the person on the line stated that they are no longer offering this specialty this year. And I just rechecked the list of specialties again (http://nursing.ucsf.edu/programs/master-science-ms-program/specialties) and it states...

Nurse Midwifery / Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner

Nurse-midwives provide primary care to childbearing women in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings including hospitals, homes, and birth centers. They provide care from a core belief that birth is not a medical event, but a very normal physiologic process. Not open for MEPN applications.

I'm not sure if I should just apply to the Family NP specialty now... since I can still work with women's populations this way too. I can't believe they took out this specialty without anyone warning :(

Looks like the site is finally live to apply!!! Good luck to all. Any other FNP applicants out there?

Here I am, ready to contribute to this thread! I'll be applying for the 2013 class as well, seeking (eventually) an NP license with a specialization in Gerontology (and adult health).

Does anyone know offhand how much the application fee is?

I am so sorry to hear about the withdrawal of the Midwifery/Women's Health specialty! I was planning to apply to the Advanced Practice Neonatal Nursing specialty, but that too has been closed to MEPN. The logistics of the "step out" years required before returning to the Masters is apparently the reason.

This is exciting though! Only about a month and a half to go!

bardone, I believe the fee is $80.

Hi Sunrunner!

Which specialty are you planning to apply to now? I'm still debating if I should apply to UCSF or not. I'm from California and UCSF was my only in-state application :(

Hi Kdiem,

I am still debating, but if I do apply it will be under Pediatrics. Yesterday I went on a research rampage and my revised plan is to apply to about 10 ABSN (accelerated BSN) programs and become an RN in 12-18 months depending on the program. The minimum experience for Neonatal NP programs is 2 years, so I would need to work in a NICU for that long anyway.

What other programs are you applying to? Because you could do the RN route then apply to UCSF later, or other MSN Midwifery programs. I saw one at .

I am also in CA, and going out of state is not that appealing to me as I want to ultimately work in our state. BUT we decided to become nurses because we like adventures and obstacles, right? It's all part of the process to get to our dream jobs.

Good luck on your decision!
