2011 UCSF MEPN Applicants

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hi,

Is there anyone lurking who is planning to apply to the 2011 program?

I have spent the last 12 years in financial marketing/communications and am excited to try and change paths into nursing. I am currently taking my prerequisite courses at city college- stats and anatomy/physiology- and going in for the GRE Saturday. I'm volunteering at a children's hospital, which is causing me to consider the pediatric nurse practitioner track... I know UCSF is very competitive and it's a long-shot for someone like me to get in, but I feel like I have to try! If it doesn't happen next year, then I'll just keep building my volunteer experience and re-apply. Also on my mind is that if for some miracle I were to get in how I would pay for it.

But enough about me... what are some other candidates' takes on preperation, interests, anxieties, etc?

Hi everyone, I'm new here and I'm planning on applying for the MEPN 2011 program. I have a question that I hope someone can help with, does anyone know when the deadline to take the GRE is? And also if I can start the application process without having taken it yet? I would like to take it in mid June but if I can't start the application until then I should probably do it sooner. Thanks!

Ride Red,

You should be fine to take the GRE in June. The application isn't due until September 1st (I believe) so you just need to have your scores in by then!

Oh good that's what I was hoping for. Thanks :)

Hi guys,

How does a 500 Verbal and 620 Quantitative (total 1120)? I just took the GRE's today. I'm debating whether to retake it or not. Any opinions?

Hi Everyone,

I'm thinking about applying to the FNP track. I'm attending the info session in June (a little late, huh?). I just finished A&P and need to take the GRE. I've been reading former MEPN student blogs and just met someone who got into the program--unfortunately, their backgrounds are making me think that I should wait another year to apply. What I've gathered from my "research" is that people who get in are bilingual and have LOTS of volunteer experience. I took spanish in high school and college, but I haven't really used it in the past 5 years. My background is a BS in microbiology and an MPH. I've been working as an epidemiologist for the past 5 years with some client contact (mostly for outbreak investigations). I volunteered at a clinic while in grad school, but haven't been able to find any clinics where I live that let "regular" people (people not currently in college) volunteer.

I'd really like to hear about other peoples' backgrounds. I know there is no definitive traits that will get you in, but I'd still like to know...

CHeers!

:D

Hi There,

I'm also applying to the UCSF MEPN program. I will be applying for the nurse midwife track. I am wondering if there are any lurking Nurse Midwife applicants and if so what other schools you are looking at. UCSF is my first choice, but I will be also be applying to Yale, Colombia, NYU, University of Seattle Washington. Are there other schools that you would recommend that I check out?

Thanks!

You can also check out UCLA and Western Uni.

Hi everybody,

Well, I'm reapplying to UCSF's MEPN for the third time this year! I took a year off last year because the rejection was starting to sting. I am hoping that perseverance pays off in this case.

I'll be applying to the ANP program. Previously, I focused on the combined ANP/Psych CNS track, but my heart is really just in ANP. I have a BA in Psychology and an MSW/LCSW and lots of volunteer experience in hospitals/needle exchange. This managed to get me an interview in 2007 but not in 2008. Third time's a charm?

Good luck everyone!

I plan on taking the GRE on July 31. Is that cutting it close? I took it last summer in mid August, got my verbal and quantitative scores immediately, but can't remember when I received my writing score (the reason I am retaking the test). I think it was within 2 to 3 weeks but can't be sure.

According to ETS, scores are sent to designated institutions 10-15 days after your test date (about the time you receive your official score report).

GRE General Test: Sending Your Scores

I'm planning to retake late July and think it should be fine.

Ah, I hope you get in this year! Did you do anything to be a stronger applicant?

Not really - admissions was not able to give me any ideas on how to become a stronger candidate. My scores and grades are decent and I have volunteering, etc. I'm just going to try to make my personal statement stand out this year!

Thanks for the support.
