UCLA MECN FALL 2013

U.S.A. California

Published

Have been looking around and haven't really seen a topic on this yet. This is my dream school/program. I am from Seattle so I am having to get a lot of info from them long-distance instead of going to an information session. Has anyone gone to an information session yet?

@myck706 thank you for letting me know! Also Congratulations on your acceptance!

Hi everyone! I've been stalking this thread for awhile but only now registered to let the waiting list people know that they're beginning to scoop people up from the waiting list! I know it's been difficult these past few weeks. I'm not sure what number they're up to now, but I was 11 on the list and received my acceptance email this morning. I'm ecstatic and can't wait to be a bruin and meet all of you! :D[/quote']

Congratulations!!!

Hi Everyone!

Congratulations to those of you that have gotten into the MECN class 2015! :) I remember how it felt getting that acceptance 2 years ago and now I'm just about to graduate! This experience definitely goes by really fast!! I highly suggest to take a really nice vacation, exercise a lot, and relax before you start. I took a month-long vacation to Italy before I started and I'm really glad I did.

Cstark is pretty much hit the main points so I'll just tell you my experience as a MECN.

I'm really glad that I chose UCLA because of the opportunities are endless. I went here for undergrad and I'm going here for graduate school. Definitely a wonderful place to be.

It's definitely a very challenging program. Expect to write lots of papers! UCLA is a research institution and on top of that, they also expect all their master's candidates to know how to write an APA research paper. Don't worry if you're not a paper writer I dislike papers with a passion) because there are resources to help you (there's graduate writing center that offers FREE paper support) and support from your classmates. Another thing is that classes may be difficult at times, but your classmates are there to support you AND you have the 2nd year MECNs also. ;)

With my graduating class of 2013, this will be the 6th cohort to graduate, so they are still in the process of fine tuning the program and your schedules. During MY first year, we had an intensive writing class and only had one fundamentals lab in our first quarter. In addition, we started our mental health clinical in the following Spring. The 1st year MECNs (aka 2014 grads) this year did not have an intensive writing class their first quarter and now they have 2 fundamentals classes (spaning from Q1 to Q2) and they started their med-surg clinical during the Winter quarter (which is earlier than us!). Another different schedule change is that they had to take 5 science classes this Winter quarter which is super challenging but they all survived. **So just remember that this is a fairly new program, make sure to send in evaluations to the faculty at the end of the quarter. They just need to fine tune it a little bit so don't be surprised if your first year changes as well.

Clinical Rotations: Being at UCLA also gives you the opportunity to work at many amazing hospitals around the area. UCLA Ronal Regan, UCLA Santa Monica, Kaiser Sunset and WLA, Torrence Memorial, West Los Angeles VA, Northridge Hospital, CHLA, Cedars-Sinai, Good Sam, and other places. What I have noticed that with our rotations, you have a chance to work at very prestigious hospitals that treat the nurses well. A majority of the hospitals I listed have a great new graduate program and are magnet status. UCLA does a great job in placing you in a teaching facility. :) I had my rotations at UCLA Santa Monica, West LA VA, CHLA, Cedars-Sinai, Northridge, and now I'm going to have my immersion at CHLA!:D

The funny thing about my immersion placement is that I used to want to only work with the gerontology population but my interest changed when I had a chance to go to CHLA for my peds rotation. Let me tell you, that definitely has changed my view on taking care of kids... so now I definitely know that I want to be a pediatric nurse. Being in this program gives you the chance to really explore the different hospital cultures so I suggest that you make sure to try different hospitals to get a sense of what you like and don't like.

I hope this helps... I wish you all the best of luck! To the waitlisters, don't give up hope! They accept up until the program starts... so I definitely suggest that if you are a waitlister and you haven't done epi, take that epidemiology class just in case.. you just never know if you get that call over the summer...

Feel free to private message me, but it might take a little while for me to get back to you... I have to get back in finishing the MECN composition paper and finish a few more job applications this week.

Thanks so much for all the great info!

To those still on the wait list...I was told that 10 people from the alternate list have been accepted as of yesterday. And for the rest of us, the waiting continues...if anyone hears from them let us know!!!!

Hi Eoneill, do you happen to know what number waitlist UCLA is on right now? @myck706 was number 11 and got in yesterday.

She didn't mention what number they were on and I didn't want to bug her too much, but since @myck706 was number 11 i'm assuming that somebody from the wait list either denied their acceptance or didn't confirm their spot on the wait list before the deadline.

Those who were accepted, is there a deadline date that deposits for the program are due?

No deposit needed.

Did anyone else on waitlist get accepted today?

In the past two years ~40% of the WL was offered admission into the class. I believe 25 students from 2011 were contacted (for 60 spots) and ~40 students for 2012 (for 90 spots).

Hopefully the trend continues this year, but with things competitive nowadays it's never a sure thing.

Thanks jkm07. Yea, thanks for the statistics. Based on last years thread, the person who was waitlisted number 37 eventually got in, but found out in May.

@Tweety2013 When I emailed to accept my waitlist status, the admissions coordinator informed me of the past two cohorts. Last year they were able to accept all 60 people on the waitlist so don't lose hope!
