UBC BSN September 2019 Applicants

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi everybody! I haven't found an active discussion thread for September 2019 applicants to UBC's BSN program yet, so here is one!

Thank you so much for answering our questions!!!

I’m also aware that you try to achieve what you CAN handle, and because Nursing is hard — all Nursing schools are afaik — passing/getting slightly below average, especially if class averages are high, is enough for me ?Although I would really like to get good grades as well (only if my brain can handle it, of course). I’m 4th year and was going to graduate with my FNH degree in 2020, yet I managed to get in to Nursing this September, haha! Do you think I’ll be okay/can handle the program without having a Bachelor’s? I have good study habits as well, but obviously, sometimes I procrastinate if I absolutely have to (ie back-to-back exams). I’m intimidated, tbh. Every person admitted is very smart and I’m slightly scared that I won’t measure up!

No problem!

I think the aspect that makes this program hard is because it's accelerated. I really did not mean to discourage anyone in my previous replies. Please do not get discouraged! It's definitely doable! Every one of you will do awesome! There were lots of people in my cohort who did not have Bachelor's either when the program started and I know they were doing fine, some really excelling! Please do not get intimidated. It's going to be really fun 20 months. If you have good study habits, you will do totally fine. So relax, don't worry about it at this moment but enjoy the summer before the program starts ;).

Oh and one more thing. Everyone is super smart but super nice too and our cohort really helped each other throughout the program. Facebook group is the space where supporting happens a lot. I'm sure your group will do awesome!

Thank you so much ❤️ It’s great to get empowerment from UBC Nursing grads!!! I think I’m overreacting for sure ? I talked to a few more upper years and they said we’ll still have time for self-care/taking breaks! I’m not too worried now!

I'm glad I can be of some help! It is quite intense program. I would say getting good grades is quite difficult but definitely possible. I also wanted good grades but I said it's difficult because everyone in the cohort are super smart. Class averages are really high most of the time. But I know some people get really high grades so it's possible with a lot of work.

Clinical course and labs are pass/fail. For the clinicals, I would recommend maybe to watch some youtube videos about head to toe assessments. Your first term clinicals are going to focus a lot on the assessment and it is an essential skill to have in nursing career. Other than that, maybe I would wait until you meet your CI (clinical instructor) since every CIs have their own style.

Thank you so much for your support and encouragement! I remember the highest marks of all sections being low 70s in some Biochemistry/Statistics courses. There was even a student that had one national competitions but still only achieved low 70s.

I'm glad to hear that the grades achieved during the UBC BSN program are reflective of the amount of work!

Thank you so much again for all your help!!! I will remember to watch those videos!

Oh that’s strange — I’ve mostly heard the opposite about BCIT’s Nursing Program! I heard it’s very intense!!

@jennifersgj I’m able to answer part of your 2nd question: in first year of my Food, Nutrition and Health degree, we took the same core courses as Science students. I remember being stressed BUT it was doable! You just get used to it. When I progressed through to upper year in FNH it got easier since you finally grasp how to study for different subjects, what strategy works and what doesn’t, what content areas you should prioritize etc. BALANCE is key. I assume that progressing through UBC Nursing is the same!! And I’ve heard that it gets easier after Term 1 Nursing, considering Term 1 exposes us to terminology and ways of thinking that we’ve never really experienced in depth before! We’ll get used to it ? Be positive!!

That's what I heard too, but from my experience, the program is super chill!

Yes, I agree with you. It's probably the unfamiliarity that makes term 1 tough. Also for me, first year at UBC was the biggest change in terms of getting used to bigger volume of material. The biggest difficulty though was in 4th year when it was the concepts that were challenging to understand and high grades weren't even in the grade distribution :S

^ so that's what I was wondering. Sorry, mb96 if I sounded pessimistic ? totally wasn't my intention.

Anyway, from what Ethereal said though, it sounds like we can do it with hard work!! I'm ready for that!!! ☺️

Like you said balance and staying positive is key ?

We’ll be sad to see you join another cohort, but best of luck to you as well!!!

Out of curiosity, do you live in Toronto? I’m sure it was hard to take various factors into consideration when picking a school!

Personally, I never applied to East Coast schools because of A. costs of living; B. proximity from family/friends (I was born and raised in Vancouver my whole life), C. UBC is closer to me, obviously ? A HUGE part of my decision to attend UBC was my future hospital placement: of course, as a Nursing student in Vancouver, getting licensed and practicing in a Lower Mainland hospital (ie VGH, St. Paul’s) is my priority/common sense.

Although UofT may have more breaks than UBC for students, UBC has a February reading week, normal Christmas break (and regular exam period), a week break between Jan-April and April-May semester plus Easter Fri and Mon off, then August off. The UofT 24 month vs 20 month program difference isn’t too bad either.

I hope you enjoy UofT!! ☺️

Hey! It was very sad letting go UBC, and an extremely hard decision to make! I chose UofT because I've always pictured myself living in Toronto after I graduated from Queen's, whether it be graduate school or for work (I am going to rent a house with 3 other girls going into first year UofT nursing aswell). I am from the GTA so a lot of my friends from my hometown and Queen's are now living in Toronto, and it's only an hour train ride back home! Also, if I were to go to UBC my boyfriend and I would most likely break up, which would always cause me to wonder "what if" you know?

Although UBC's program is more compressed than UofT, I prefer a lighter workload and not having to do clinical on the weekends. I like how we have classes Monday-Wednesday and clinical on Thursday and Friday, and weekends off! Plus I will have access to all the major Toronto hospitals for my clinical rotations, like Sick Kids, Toronto General, Mount Sinai which are all right across the street from the Bloomberg nursing building! So if I build connections in those hospitals, I'll have a career waiting for me after I graduate (hopefully) that is close to home and I wouldn't have to transfer my license. We get a fall reading week, a winter reading week, and one in April too! We get July and August plus part of June off for summer! Although the faculty is a lot bigger than UBC (170ish compared to 120), I don't mind that at all, more people to meet!

All in all, UofT was the first school I looked into when I wanted to apply to nursing, and it's always been my dream program. UBC's program is also a dream come true, but I know someone else will live that dream for me! ? I hope you enjoy UBC too girl!! ❤️

Cool ? I hope everything goes well for you! Of course, your personal life is important! And since UofT was your first choice/first dream school, and you can see yourself building a life as a Nurse there, it makes all the sense! (The same goes for me in Van)

Yeah, UBC has the option of weekend clinicals, but if we do get weekend clinicals, we have two days off during the school week, so to me it’s fine either way (I get a breather), haha! Have fun and I know we’ll all try to become the best nurses!! ❤️

Hi everyone I just got notice I am number 5 on the reserve list; when did everyone have to confirm by? Thank you:)

When I first got my admission notification on May 2nd, I was fifth on the waiting list. I was taken off the waitlist on June 10th, and I had till June 19th to confirm and have all the pre-admission requirements completed. This included paying the $500 deposit, uploading a signed copy of the admission agreement, booking my immunization review appointments, and doing the criminal record check. I'm pretty sure everyone who got in right away had till June 15th to get the pre-admission requirements done so I'm sure as more people come off the reserve list, their deadlines will be extended.

I now have till July 31st, to submit a bunch of other requirements like the N95 mask certification and proof of first aid & CPR.

Hi guys!

My name is Tanner and today Ruxandra sent me my acceptance letter and I am so thrilled to meet all of you! Maybe I’m the first male to post on this thread!

For those looking at this thread for next year, I was number 39 on the waitlist ? Dont lose hope!

My first year at UBC was super hard and lonely for me as I didn’t really make any friends. So anyone that wants to be friends please HMU!!

Good luck everyone and I am so stoked to meet all of you!!!! ???

Yay, Congrats! I am sure that this year will be very different for you. We are all going to be trying to get through this intense program together. I can't see how we wouldn't get close.

Look forward to meeting you.

I was #34 on the waitlist originally, #22 ten days ago and received notice I got in today!!!! It's still June so I think you have an amazing chance!

Hey all! I was number 13 on the wait list then number 1 and got my acceptance letter to UBC a few days ago! I got into Langara as well and was contemplating on which school to attend.

I’m a UBC alumna, so UBC feels like home to me. However, I was told to avoid UBC nursing as it lacked to provide sufficient clinical hours due it being an accelerated program. I’m so glad I read through this forum and got proper information, especially from a current nursing grad! It has definitely put my mind at ease ? This forum has seriously been a life saver (and a stress reliever haha) so thank you to everyone who contributed! I’m excited to start this journey and wish you all the best!
