UALR Nursing Program Applicant 2014

U.S.A. Arkansas

I plan on applying for the ADN progam at UALR soon. I am a nervous reck. I know there are more people applying than spots available. I have about 96 quality points. I made an 84 on my evolve exam. I have a 3.5 gpa. I have taken most of my Support Courses except Chemistry and Microbiology. I am taking Micro in the spring and have to repeat chemistry b/c I made a D in it about 10 years ago. I'm scared that chemistry will ruin my chances. I have a prior bachelors degree. I was just wondering what shot do I have of getting in the program.

Welcome to nursing school! LOL. Seriously, nursing school is not like other degrees. Its hard and fast paced regardless of the school you school to go to. I have friends that graduated from other programs. From what they've told me, all the programs have short acceptance times. As for the move in, that's just because of the summer term. You do have several days to a week to move in for fall.

FutureRN is right. Every nursing program I know about uses the first class or two to weed out anyone that isn't serious. We started with 259 students. We lost about 60 during the intro class. Then almost as many during the fall. After that, we just lost a few each class and none after this last one.

Once you get past Adult 1 and Health Promotions in the fall, the rest of the semesters are split in half, where you take one class and clinical for half and switch to the other. You have a lot of material and a short amount of time to learn in. It can be very overwhelming at times. But its completely manageable. If this is something you really, really want, don't let the fast pace scare you. I looked into nursing when I went to college years ago, and I let my doubts win and spent 4 years studying for something that was ok, but not what I wanted.

@ Tired Kitten. Tell me about it. I got a degree in a field that I never really cared for. Now I'm going back for my true passion. I love this field. My last job in collections paid way more than what I make at the clinic I'm at. But I am so much happier with the lower pay b/c I love what I do.

Stick in there girl! I did feel like they were a little disorganized at the orientation. However, that could have been do to the fact that they tried to start earlier and shifted the schedule around a little bit. I was very unimpressed by the presentation of the SNA. They seemed like were scattered all over the place. I am glad that they have fundraisers (like selling the equipment) that benefit me. They use some of that money to throw Christmas parties and such. You did not have to purchase the supplies from the fundraiser but I'm glad it was an option. Also, as far as the manuals and course syllabus, at the beginning we were not allowed to sign up for NURS 1300 until like May 16 or something but the dept. moved that date up to accommodate for financial aid or something. Therefore, everything else like the course syllabus and things have been moved up. This is a possible cause as to why everything seems so scattered. I hope I made sense. To recap...stick with it. It is a great program and the clinical site experiences are the best. This is what nursing is all about, going with the flow and taking the challenges as they come. :)

From what I know, UALR has a very good program. That being said, at the end of the day, it's not about them. Whether or not you graduate the program is up to you. If you want it, the opportunity is there. Plus, I don't know how many of you have the Nursing Fund book, but I am about a 1/4 of the way through, and it is not hard material. This is going to be an overview, "welcome to nursing" course that teaches you what it means to be a nurse, how to think like a nurse, and some basic nursing skills. Yes, the book is huge, and there is a lot of material to read, but it is a super easy read if you have had your pre-requs (and we all obviously have). I found myself saying, "Ok...ok...I know...I know this too...ok" a lot. There is a bit of money to fork over up front, but as long as you can still put food on the table, that should not be the deciding factor. If you want it, get it.

EEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeKKKKKKKKKKKK! I got accepted...got a phone call and I start in two weeks:) I wish I would have heard sooner because I missed the orientation:( but that's okay because I am in:)

Oh that's awesome!! Join our fb group! All of the orientation info is there and I will fill you in on anything else you need to know.

Thanks soooo much:)!!!!
