UALR Nursing Program Applicant 2014

U.S.A. Arkansas

Published

I plan on applying for the ADN progam at UALR soon. I am a nervous reck. I know there are more people applying than spots available. I have about 96 quality points. I made an 84 on my evolve exam. I have a 3.5 gpa. I have taken most of my Support Courses except Chemistry and Microbiology. I am taking Micro in the spring and have to repeat chemistry b/c I made a D in it about 10 years ago. I'm scared that chemistry will ruin my chances. I have a prior bachelors degree. I was just wondering what shot do I have of getting in the program.

Thanks i get it now!

@tiredkitten I didn't even know UALR had a medical terminology class! I will take that instead of Advanced First Aid. Do you happen to know the name of the class? Or the course number? Is it located under the Nursing classes? Thank you for taking your time out to help us. I truly appreciate your help.

Also, @tiredkitten, if you or any other "advanced" student nurse would like to join our facebook group to be our "mentors," we would love to have you! :) Can I get a witness??? lol

The class is called Medical Terminology. Its an online nursing class. NURS 1301. There are 2 sections being taught right now, but I don't see one listed under summer or fall. You can try calling the department to see if they are going to teach it this summer. If you search for that class under spring 2014 option and click on the name, it says the class is taught every summer and fall.

Thank you! I'll give them a call. :)

@mandy ok I looked up the medical terminology class and I don't see it for this summer. Right now I'm registered for anthropology b/c I couldn't find anything else, but I'm thinking of taking that advanced first aid class.

Well, if they don't offer the medical term class in the summer then I'll be taking the advanced first aid class. So, take it with me! :)

@mandy. I'm now registered for that class Advanced first Aid in the July class. I'm glad you mentioned that class. If I'm going to be taking a class that I don't need for financial aid purposes, at least I'm taking something that will benefit me in the medical field.

Maybe it is just me, but Im really reconsidering attending UALR's nursing program. Things havent been running as smoothly as I would have like. When admission letters went out we had barely a week to respond, the orientation meeting had a lot of helpful information but seemed to rush you to buy things. If I would have know we would have been asked to pay I would have been better prepared and able to participate. Im nervous about when the textbooks will be availble, I have a feeling I will be rushed in that area also and wont have much time to review. Im out of state, so I have to allow time to have my book shipped. It is also my understanding that we have to move in on Memorial Day (a holiday) , May 26 @ 12pm. I've never been on a campus where everyone was told to move in all one one day, its usually been over 3 days that they allow students to move in. And the email, I received today about the SNA membership being increased and now more money is needed has really made me uneasy. Is it just me or are things not greatly organized?

Can anyone put me at ease about the classes?

I don't feel as if it is disorganized, but just rushed. There's not a lot of time between when Spring semester ends and Summer starts. Couple that with trying to coordinate paperwork and information for 200 plus students, and I'm sure it is difficult for the department. The syllabus/course manual should be available this week. The policy and procedure manual and textbook is currently available.Below is a comprehensive list of things we need to buy (as best as I can remember).

As as far as housing goes, I would contact housing and see if they can make arrangements so that you can move in earlier or if they can make any other accommodation. I will say that when I got my first bachelors at another institution, the college didn't let us move in until the Sunday before classes started Monday. So I don't know that it's so unusual.

I would encourage you to stick with the program. It is an excellent program with one of the highest NCLEX pass rates in the state (if not the highest). Don't be discouraged by the rushed nature of what has happened this far. I think part of this is to test your flexibility, adaptability, and time management as well. I work at a hospital with many UALR graduates, and they all told me that this first class is really meant to play mind games with you, weed out the people who signed up for wrong reasons (only for money), see if you're dedicated and willing to put in the study time.

Ok Ms. Bennett. Let me help you out. I can understand how you feel. They did spring up all these prices at one time and they pretty much expected everybody to have the money at orientation. Which is ridiculous. I think it is all worth it to try to stick with the program if you can. The program seems like it will be hard but worth it. How many other careers do you know where you can go into different specialties and pretty much get a job anywhere. My sister-in-law is a RN and she has worked some of everywhere. I know you don't get into the field for the money, but the pay also helps. She recently turned down an offer in Wynne, AR that paid $50 an hour. She only been out of school for about 4 years. If this is truly your dream you have to go for it. Don't be like me and years later you regret not going for it. Also I believe the quick moving in is b/c it is the summer term. Everything is faster in the summer.
