UAlberta After Degree Nursing January 2012

Hello Everyone,

I recently found out I was accepted into the University of Alberta's After Degree Nursing program to begin in January 2012. :yeah:

I've read some older posts about their CBL learning and been a bit discouraged but was wondering if anyone has heard any positive news about it since? Has it improved since it's inception? How are people who are graduating from it finding? It'd be especially awesome to hear from some students in it right now or just recently finished it!

Also, being not so great with computers and what not, I've been having difficulty figuring out how to accept the offer of admission. Their website just says "Congratulations" and basically that I can enrolll at any time. However, I feel as though there should be a confirmation deposit I should be paying or a button to push on their student service centre... If anyone can shed light on that, I'd also be very grateful.

Cheers,

Grace

First off, congrats!

There are a few threads about the U of A after degree program. A bunch are listed here: search: U of A nursing

I haven't heard anything positive about the PBL system although my exposure to it is only what I've read here and some personal comments from an ex U of A student who transferred to the U of C BNAT program. Needless to say they enjoyed PBL so much they transferred schools. ;)

I believe there is a member here who recently graduated from the U of A program (sorry I can't recall their name).

You could also try contacting the member UofANursingAdvisor: https://allnurses.com/members/559973/ and ask some questions, although they haven't been active in almost 2 months.

You will need to pay a tuition deposit (I'm assuming the U of A is similar to the U of C in that regard) so maybe contact the admissions department on how to do so? I have mine set up through online banking so it's easypeasy.

Good luck!

i just graduated this august from the u of a, after degree program. hmm, how do i describe the cbl? basically, you and a group of 20 peers discuss scenarios. each member of the group researches a topic related to the scenario and "presents" it to the group, complete with references. there is an instructor that divides their time between 2 groups, monitoring our progress and research. (they will guide you if you are off base or missing something). some people hated it (why are we paying money to teach ourselves, etc), others put up with it... the good thing about this group work is that it does teach you about working with different personalities, but the bad thing is that you have to deal with all sorts of personalities:):idea: as far as i know, the program is always changing based on student feedback. i'm happy to be working, making money , and not spending all my free time on homework. so, congratulations on being accepted, work hard, and when you are done - you will be a nurse!

i also had a similar issue - a friend of mine who was already in school had to tell me how to log on to e-class, bear tracks, etc. when i was first in uni, all of my course registration was done by phone! you need to log on to bear tracks and create your schedule by adding courses (they give you a very strict schedule to follow).

@Petethecanuck

Thanks!

Turns out as of Tuesday I was accepted into Calgary after all. I'm pretty happy about this as I was uncertain about how I would fair in a CBL program although it sounsd like it could a very effective tool for some learning types. I'm pretty old school and did my entire undergrad in a lecture-based system so I feel like I know how to learn that way.

That said, YAY. Calgary! I'm definitely heading off there for January. I've even figured out how to register for my courses and everything. I guess you will be nearly done by the time I get there though. =D

Anyways, thanks for your help in answering the various questions I've posted on allnurses.

@rangerlil

That's got to the best and most concise answer about CBL I've come across. Thanks for the information and helping me make a better decision for me. Congratulations on graduating and getting a job!
