I am familiar with the traditional BSN program. Ask away!

Hey I'm looking into the UAB program first off can I get in with a act score below a 20. Then how do you like the program and just clinical site locations do they have open lab for you to practice and how big are nursing class sizes just all types of info how many hours do the students study per day

Hi there,

As far as I know, the School of Nursing itself does not look at your ACT score for the BSN program. To apply for the BSN program, you'd have to be accepted by the university- the UAB admissions office are the people who look at ACT scores and such.

Clinical sites include, UAB Hospital, and the VA Medical Center. Where you do them depends on what semester you're in. As far as class sizes, about 120 students are excepted each semester, and there are simulation labs open to nursing students.

Personally, I like the program because it is well known throughout the region and has a lot of resources as far as research goes.

Sorry for the late reply! Here are my questions: What all do they look for during the application process, do they look at your overall gpa or pre-req gpa, do they care about health care experience, do they use a point system? That's all I have for now lol. Thanks!

Hi!

I am a recent graduate of the BSN program at UAB. It's a great school, and I really have enjoyed my time here. The clinical locations are great and really can't be beat. Because we are right in the middle of a healthcare saturated city, we have access to nearly all the clinical sites possible. I have had clinicals on multiple floors at UAB, the VA, Children's Hospital, and Brookwood. I have had friends have clinicals at Trinity, St. Vincents, and many clinics in the area.

They do have an open lab for practice and it is open M-F every week for current nursing students. Most of the semesters I was in nursing school, we were required to get a certain number of hours in the open lab.

Class size is pretty large due to the increasing number of applicants and acceptance rate. My cohort started with around 120 and we graduated with around 90. Most of our in class courses we had all together. For labs, we were split up into groups of about 30. For clinicals, we were split into groups of about 7-8.

As for if you can get in with a 20 ACT, that is really up to the university itself. According to the admissions website, the minimum ACT score is 20 so I feel like you would be okay. Also, before you can begin nursing school (for BSN) you have to have around 2 years (or 5-6 semesters) of prerequisite classes. These are classes like biology, anatomy, physiology, english, math, etc. You can see more information on that here: http://www.uab.edu/nursing/home/images/stories/info_sa/BSN_Fact_Sheet.pdf

Some people take these prerequisite classes at Jeff State or a local community college if that is a better option for them at the time.

The application process is not too, too bad. There is no interview so that is good! The application is comprised of your resume, a 1 page essay on why you chose nursing, and your college GPA. I can't remember, but I feel like teacher/work reference letters may have been a requirement too. They do not use a point system or the TEAS test. Only community college (ADN, 2 year) programs use this. They recommend this GPA be above a 3.2 for admission. Mine was a 3.6 and I applied for the Spring class. I will say the Fall class is harder to get into and a bit more competitive. I applied for Spring just because that is when I finished my prerequisites. I do know some people that got in with GPAs ranging from 2.8ish-3.1, however, they got in for the spring class. To be competitive for the Fall, you need at least a 3.2-3.3 GPA. At least 60 hours of health care experience is recommended but required. I volunteered at Children's Hospital for mine and it was a great experience!

I hope this helps. Good luck!

Hi!

I start in two weeks and we have yet to get a schedule. Did you attend class five days a week? How was first semester?
