U. of South Alabama - Spring 2015 - BSN->DNP - Advanced Emergency Nursing

Published

Hello there,

My name is Cindy L. I am accepted to University of South Alabama this Spring (2015) for the BSN to DNP track for "Advanced Emergency Nursing (Family NP/Adult-Gerontological Acute Care Dual Role)".

I am here to reach out to others for support. I am so scared! I graduated with my BSN in 2008. I am currently 29 years old and have been an RN in Atlanta, GA, for the past 6.5 years. I have a background in ICU, not emergency, but really wanted the FNP "just in case". Good decision/bad decision? I don't know...but it sounds like it's going to kick my orifice.

Any who, anyone out there for support? ...Or tips/advice/whatever I will take it! I have heard that Grad school is very self-motivated, independent, and (often times) lonely so I could use the solidarity in support groups hehe :)

Congratulations on being accepted to the advanced practice program. Family practice has several benefits in that you will have the flexibility to work in many different settings and with all age groups. You are very correct - any masters or doctorate level program worth its salt is going to kick your butt. As to the isolation of the program, that will depend on how the program is structured. Are you required to go out to the university site once a semester or ever? Speaking from personal experience as some one who completed the MSN and DNP ten years apart. The degree of isolation that you are likely to experience will depend on the group dynamics of the individuals you start class with and you. It is possible to be very close to people that you meet only once. If you have the option of attending any NP association meetings in your area (most allow students) do so this will offer you another avenue for support.

I'm accepted too, for the FNP track! I feel pretty trepidatious, as well. Congratulations and consider yourself supported from Colorado

Hi there!

I have been accepted as well into the BSN >DNP program for the dual role Advanced Emergency/FNP in the Spring 2015. I am really looking forward to getting back to school. I graduated in 2005 with my BSN and have been in the ED since. Looking forward to meeting you all at the orientation and speaking online. I'm taking the 14 semester program with a sub specialty in cardiac care. Congrats to you guys from Florida!!

Hi guys! I'm looking into applying for the Fall 2015 BSN-DNP Dual ENP program. I talked to them today and they wouldn't tell me the number of seats in the program. Do you know how competitive it is? I have a good GPA and ER experience, but I don't know if I should be getting my hopes up! I saw that the same program at Vanderbilt only admits 12 students per year!

Specializes in pediatrics, occupational health.

Congrats to you all! I am not sure how many were accepted into the ENP program when I began in 2011. I did acute care peds, and we only had 11 in my group. I remember someone saying at orientation that there were over 300+ applicants and only 50 were accepted into the semester when I began. I am not exactly sure if those are correct numbers, but as the program wore on, it seemed it was true.

When we went to orientation, one of the guys began a fb group (a closed group) so that we could all support each other. As the specialities divided, we became very close with the people in our speciality, but still kept in close contact with our other cohort.

At graduation, we all got together. Sadly, out of the 11 people in my group, only 7 of us made it to the graduation (some had dropped out, others fell behind). We are all still friends, and we all still support each others endeavors.

It is really great to see how going through the trenches creates such a bond!

Best of luck to all of you!

Hi all,

I am debating on applying to this school for this program :) I am nervous and scared as it is a big commitment and I have a family and am a military spouse. I just wanted to see what you all have to say about the program so far... Is it self taught or live online classrooms? What about clinical? I looked at a sample schedule and it looks overwhelming...
