U.S. Public Health Service Nursing: What is it really like?

Published

Hello,

I often got asked as a USPHS nurse, what is it like to be in the USPHS. There have been other threads started on this topic on the allnurses site and many have shared their candid experiences with this uniformed service. These threads are, however, old and I am wishing to start a new. I am currently looking for all nurses or other professionals that have been in the USPHS to share their experiences and am most interested in officers that were treated poorly in this uniformed service to get a real and candid view of this branch of service and find out the "whys" of this poor treatment and how the situations can be remedied by those of us that have been treated badly. We are a stronger force if we stand united.

You currently are a usphs nurse? I'm currently active duty Navy with 6 years and doing research on USPHS to see if it is a good switch for me but trying to get a inside scoop. I want to pursue my masters in Public Health. What capacity do you work as a nurse? Or do you choose. I have been in management and leadership the last three years. Would that be a possible role or is all nurses working shift work with direct patient care? Do you have any insight on how military rank weighs on the rank you enter USPHS? Or possibly know any prior active duty nurse that transitioned to USPHS?
