Yes there are jobs in informatics other than in the hospital - I am really a strong believer in folks being proactive when it comes to that kind of question, so my question to you have you done your research and looked to see if there are "jobs in informaitcs other than in the hospital"??
Your instincts are right related to the MDS role within LTC facilities being about using a computer program and not necessarily about informatics.
Just because you are standing in a garage that does not make you a car.
It sounds like you really need to learn more about what informatis is, what the roles are within this specialty, what specifically you want to do in informatics and what do you mean by "advance further"?
Feel free to message or e-mail me your phone number (DO NOT POST HERE) with what time zone you are in and the best time to contact you and we can brain storm.
thank you how can i contact you further...i guess my issue is im taking an online program so my advisor is giving meadvice but its email back and forth:( also, i guess my whole thing is until i complete my degree, what kind of job or jobs should i be in until my degree is completed. which type of job would be most beneficial...mds, or staff rn or whatnot...
I think it depends on how much clinical experience you now have. How long have you been a practicing RN? Where you an LPN before and if so, how long did you practice? What type of clinical practice experience do you have? 5 years in Med-Surge as an LPN and 2 in surgery as an RN for example? If you are beyond the novice level in nursing you can do a couple of things. Volunteer at the hospital or the HH agency to be a super user with the systems in use and start looking for open entry level informatics/information systems positions at both the hospital and the HH Agency you currently work at. Look on websites like Linked In.com, Indeed.com, ANIA-CARING, AMIA for entry level jobs in your geographical location. Join your local NI organization. We can talk more if you give me a call I sent you a PM containing my phone number.
