is there a discussion group for TWU Fall 2004 students? I'm new to this board. I'll be starting TWU in 2 weeks... Very excited to meet others in my class

Nice to hear from everyone! I know that some folks from the online chem review in june are planning a pre-start get together at a place called "8" which is downtown... I think 111 E 3rd the saturday before orientation.

Good luck to everyone!

TCRN, did u get my e-mail? I move on Saturday. Can't wait to meet all of you!!

Good news for all the webct fans- I called the anesthesia office today and spoke to Dr. Rinke. Seems as though our fall lectures will be on webct and available for 5 days or so at a time.

As noted prior, Dr. Reinke will be the source of many ulcers. I had the "pleasure" of learning from Dr. Reinke 8 years ago (my how time flies) and I still have the ulcers to show for it-LOL. All I can say is study for the first test until you are sure you have it mastered, then study some more. That first six weeks of "easy material"(can you believe you can study a cell for 6 weeks? How hard can the test be-it's just a cell) will make you think we are all nuts that we say how hard it is. Study your notes-forget about Guyton-if you have questions, ask Dr. Reinke. He's the one testing you and is very approachable for questions. He is there to help you, but he WILL make you know physiology as well as med students. There are times when you will hate him, but when you are taking boards and getting pimped by MDs at your new job, you will thank him. If you take Valley Review-I guarantee you will not hear any new information.

Study for that first exam like you have never studied before. When you get your test score, you can judge how you need to study for the others. I am sure no one will sit there and say they knew the material too well. It is important to do well on that first exam-if you do not, its not the end of the world, but it adds pressure because you must do well on the rest of his tests. By the way, the renal exam is a *****.

It is not that all the material he teaches you is that difficult, it's how he tests you. DO NOT memorize your notes only. If you do this, he will bury you. You can memorize your notes, but you had better be able to dig between the lines and apply the principles he teaches you. You are not in nursing school anymore-simple regurgitation of the material will have you shuttling bedpans in the ICU again.

This is the speech I received from a prior Dr Reinke student when I arrived at TWU. It scared me to death, but it helped(and it was not an exaggeration). Dr. Reinke will make you know physiology so well, you can have a professional conversation with a MD and very possibly get in the last word. Every headache Reinke gives you is worth it in the end. BUT DO NOT FALL BEHIND!!!!!!

Would I do it again? After being in practice for 5 years, yes...I probably would. But it has taken me this long to say that. You will leave campus burned out from studying, but your brain will be overflowing with useful information to aid you in your travels for many years to come.

My study group often said Memorizing the pre-printed notes is mearly a prerequisit for taking the test. you have to know those notes very well but its the test. the test will pull a skill out of you that is unstudyable (I belive) you either have the ablilty to think this way or not. and you may get better after consequtive tests. I had a buddy who always knew the stuff betther than anyone in study group. he had pre printed and guyton virtually memorized but would consistatly barley pass the tests.

also spelling is not an issue with Dr. Reinke (lucky for me). So you cant bom a test based spelling but you better be close. phenetically at least.

this is how I studied if you care.

1) take notes in class while recording in on my digital

2) relisten to the lecture directly after class no matter what time it is or how you feel, as you listen you follow along in the pre-printed notes and add to or take away from.

3) after you listen to the lecture (wich i understand will be avialabel on web ct now, although you could speed up an audio device) you make detailed note cards from the now perfect pre- printed notes.

4) by time you do all this everynight and it takes about 4 hours you won't hardley need to go back over your notes or review you note cards but they are there for primping before the test.

this is a lot. perhaps too much. but it did the trick.

I really appreciate your study tips. I will definitely try them. Did you bring your book to class and mark/make notes in the book or did you simply take fresh notes?

I did not bring my book to class. I think it would be very difficult to follow along in the book.

Well, good luck to all of you starting this week. I just finished the first year . A few words of advice: Don't get behind; use Ben's preprinted notes; take full advantage of Stan lab - you will get out whatever you put into it. It's hard, but it's totally "doable". Your anxiety level will recede eventually, but this time next year you will be in my shoes. You will have to start applying the mountain of information that you have learned. Good luck to everyone in my class and the class of 2006.
