Hi Everyone,
I applied to the Nurse Residency Program for UVA ED and the ortho/trauma unit. I am doing my capstone in the ED and didn't get it. Wasn't my time. I accepted the Ortho/Trauma unit NRP. I was wondering if people have ever been denied a spot in a unit such as the ED and did a year on another unit and then reapplied to their first choice, in my case the ED. I just love the ED and really hope to return as CLIN 2 to the UVA ED. Do people reapply often and get it the second time around? Any advice. Feeling discouraged about not getting it.

Of course, as you may be aware, you have to work in your unit at least a year before you can transfer (policy change from 6 months). My understanding is that 6 East is severely understaffed right now, but perhaps that is changing. Keep in mind that after a year on ortho/trauma, you may be able to look at ED possibilities elsewhere - there's always MJH.
Sent you a PM~!
The NRP is a year so you can't transfer although I know of someone that did transfer recently after only 6 months in the ICU so I guess there is small exception. I am curious to why that unit is so short staffed?

That's a bummer. How are the other CNL students wanting to work at UVA doing in their search? Do most of them have jobs lined up already?
The way the local media is painting the picture, you would think new grads could write their own ticket, but I have my doubts.
Did you see this article from a few weeks back?

Hey!!! So I do have a job it just wasn't my first choice. Each day I wake up the shock wears off a little more that I am not in my dream job just yet! So of the CNLs that applied to the nurse residency program all have received a job!!! :) That is great news. My one year goal now is a little different than orginially but I plan to bust my ass on the ortho/trauma floor and apply to UVAs Acute Care NP program in a year. I hope to also reapply to the UVA ED and I will keep applying until they eventually take me. Everything happens for a reason and I believe I can be a more desirable candidate in a year once I become a CLIN II!! Are you at UVA now or you at PVCC?

That's the way I look at things too - that everything happens for a reason. I did not get in to the CNL program and was hoping to since I got my undergrad at UVA. So I am at PVCC and take ODU classes online for my BSN. I'll be applying for the new grad Clin I jobs in about a year. I am really hoping to have a job lined up this time next year like you do.
That's great that the rest of your classmates all got jobs too. I don't think that will be the case for the rest of mine since most will only have their ADN - but there are about a dozen of us at PVCC getting that ODU BSN, which will hopefully help our cause. I will also be trying to get a PCA job at UVA this summer to help crack the door open a little more as well.
I'm sure you will be in the ED before you know it!
I would def. do the PCA thing because one of the 3 candidates the ED took was a student coming with an ADN from PVCC. She graduates in May I think. So getting your foot in the door is key!! :) Having a guaranteed job at UVA before even graduating is kind of the perk the CNL program. Are you interested in a certain specialty?

Why do I need to look at ED jobs elsewhere? I plan to stay in the UVA system plus I love the academic setting. MJH is not an option for my own personal reasons. I would go to Augusta before I go to MJH. I am going to reapply to the ED in a year or two after the NRP.
Well, that is encouraging. I know another ADN student who graduated last May and he got a job in the ED but had been working there as a tech for a while as well. I will be looking to get in to an ICU which I know will be very competitive as well.
Why? Because if you want to work in ED and you're not hired in UVA's ED, there are others available; that's all.
