Trying to transfer into NICU

Published

HI All,

I just wanted to get some advice. I have been working as a nurse for 1 year and 2 months as a adult Neurology med/surg and stepdown RN. This was not my first choice but I couldn't be picky since jobs were limited and I didn't have my BSN yet for 5 more months which is required to work at the Women and Childrens hospital here since they are magnet. Now that I have done a year on my unit I would like to transfer within the same hospital system to the womens hospital and work in either NICU, mother baby or the extended care nursery, but really want NICU. There are job openings for all of them and have applied through our internal job board. But the applications just go through HR and it tells you if your application has been sent onwards. I know my application for NICU And mother baby were sent on but its been over a week and havent had a call yet.

I just cannot deal with crazy demented adults anymore. I know who the nursing manager is for the NICU. Would it be inappropriate to contact her via her work email and express my interest?

Thanks for any advice.

Specializes in NICU, PICU, PACU.

You could ask to shadow. And then you can meet the crazy parents we work with. No escape from that lol

Definitely contact the manager! Express your interest and ask to shadow. It's a wonder what getting your name out there and your face recognizable to the nurses on the unit.

It would be more appropraite to email her to make an appointment to talk about the position in person or walk in the office to see if she's available to talk to you more about the position. Managers get so many emails a day especially from people wanting positions. They would prefer to see a face. I've gotten all my jobs by walking in and meeting managers in person. If she says that you don't have "enough" experience or the right qualifications to work in the NICU then apply to Mother Baby (postpartum) It's very easy to transfer from postpartum to NICU, plus it will help give you that neonatal experience before setting into NICU.
