Trouble finding job in GA due to probation

Nurses Recovery

Published

Hello all, I am a nurse who is currently on a consent order from the BON. My particular consent has no narcotic restriction on it, yet I have not been able to find a job for almost 6 years. Companies/Hospitals used to interview me and then never call back after they find out that I'm on probation; now when they call about interviews I tell them about the probation and they just say, sorry we can't have someone like you working for us. At least it saves me a wasted interview. I am a firm believer that it is because I have a public consent order and the perspective employers can read about my past transgressions. The thing is, these things are in the PAST! I've been clean and sober for 6 years and have the screens to prove it, yet no one will give me a chance. Has anyone else had this trouble? If so how did you overcome/deal and did you ever find a job?

I don't have enough posts to send a PM yet, but I really wanted to know how you're doing now? I also need people to talk to, who are/were in the same boat as me. Have you had any luck on the job front? For me it's been almost 2 years since the incident. 10 months since my license was reinstated. I've been to 7 or 8 interviews. I was hired a few weeks after my license was reinstated, bought the uniforms, had my TB & drug test, etc... only to be called by them that they rescinded the job offer. I send a full description of my situation with every application I submit, and regardless of this they still call me. I have the drug screens until November this year, but I'm starting to feel like I'll never work as a nurse again. I sincerely miss it. The last guy who interviewed me himself had once been on CO and he told me they hire many nurses on Narc restrictions, the whole deal. I'll tell you my story when I can send a PM!

I found that nursing wasn't quite as compassionate when it comes to those of us who have the disease of addiction. I've been clean and clear from my CO since August 2014. When I got my license back I began working with people like me, addiction and mental health. I never thought I'd be doing it but I love it and it makes me feel better about my past. I actually feel like I help these people because I have been there.

At any rate, keep applying, keep writing letters to the BON requesting to have your CO lifted and then things will turn for you.

Good luck to you. If you would like any other advice, you're welcome to email me: [email protected].
