Travelling with a Family

Hey all- I'm a student now but my dream is to get my RN and sell the house, buy a big RV and take the wife and three boys on a Travelling Nurse expedition of the country for the next how-ever-many years. We homeschool so schooling won't be an issue, but I'm wondering how realistic this sounds? Has anybody else traveled with their families? If I decided to do the housing option instead of the RV, how does that work? Will there be issues finding adequate housing? Other things I should be thinking about?

Just trying to make this dream a reality...

Yeah ha! I do write a lot about my experiences in the Health Care world. My wife is a freelancer too so there's potential there.

I do have a question or thought abouthomeschooling. I admit I don't know a lot of details except that I believe you must follow a state-approved curriculum, YES??? Would this very greatly affect your kids' programs state-to-state? Like for credit hours completion and graduation requirements? Just asking...The other thing would be the need for state-appropriate licenses in order to practice all around. I know a lot can be done on-line today, but it will still take time and preplanning.Good luck if you can swing it!!!

Different states do have varying degrees of regulation when it comes to homeschooling- some like Alaska have almost no regulation and they pay you to do it, others have strict guidelines- usually there are options that allow you to fit it to your situation. With the whole license thing- I'd probably try to hit all of the compact states first. I need to look into the other state's requirements though- SOme states require that my school meet the standards of their schools- others want fees, and I'm not sure but others may want me to take their boards- I'm in Iowa, and I'm told that we are pretty high up in the standards dept but that could just be a lot of smoke :)

In Iowa we can take the state curriculum and they leave you alone or you can make your own and have to send your kid to one day of school a week with a local homeschool association- we choose the latter.

I'm actually not a traveler but do have 4 kids, we've moved far away from family, and we've homeschooled through that experience...with that said my main concern would be the kids not getting the opportunity to settle in somewhere with friends. As they get older this becomes more important...in fact, very important. There is a HUGE military base of families in our area...they move every 2 yrs. or deal with unpredictable leaves, deployment, reassignment...and they all say how hard it is on the kids. Although we love traveling with the kids (so maybe for a year and then pick a favorite location to settle)...I think it would get taxing and the kids would need more of the stability in the big picture. I know there is a "taxable home" rule where if you don't have an established home, your stipends etc. get taxed as income and you make less! Depends on your situation, I guess!! Sounds awesome, wish I could do the same!!!!
