Traveling to Reno!

Published

Taking a travel assignment in Reno... most likely going to be working ICU at Renown. Does anyone have information about housing (whereto's, wherenot's)? I've never stepped foot in Reno and would love to have some idea of safe and unsafe... Also, I love to ski. I'm assuming it's a big deal out there? Any info would be helpful -- housing, what to do, anything... Thanks!

Going through TruStaff. This is my first assignment with them, and everything has been on target so far. Right now, I am just waiting on an interview, but there are several positions available... I hear Renown is a fairly traveler-friendly place?

I had also read that southwest of town was nice? I don't mind driving to work, but sure would love to save the money if I could walk and not get mugged.

Have you traveled or do you live in Reno?

I'm not in Reno, I'm in a small town in northern NV, but Reno is the nearest city (160 mi. away!) so I've spent a lot of time over there. Mt. Rose has some great skiing - my son came out on leave and had a great time there - take a look at their website and check out the Chutes!

Someone else will have to chime in on housing, but there is lots to do and it's an easy city to get around. I found that most of the shopping is either on Kietzke or on S. Virginia St. Try out the burgers at Joe's Diner on S. Virginia - they are really good! The Pioneer Center is where all the symphony, dance and traveling Broadway shows come. There are also lots of shows and various performers at all of the casinos.

Make sure to plan a trip up to Virginia City IF you get here before the snow - that is a killer road if you are not a very comfortable mountain driver (ever driven up a 15% grade?).

I work in one of the ICUs at Renown in Reno. Do you know which one you're interviewing for? There's a med/surg ICU, a trauma ICU and cardiac ICU. We may be co-workers soon!

Anyhow, traveler friendly: yes! At least the ICU I work in. It's mostly staff on dayshift and a good mix of staff & travelers on nights. Many of our travelers either extend to 6 months, or have worked here on previous assignments. I'm in the med/surg ICU which is called the Roseview ICU.

Skiing is a big deal up here and you have lots of options: Mount Rose, Sugar Bowl, Boreal, Heavenly are just a handful of the more popular ones.

A lot of travelers are housed at Manzanita Gate, a nice apartment complex in NW Reno. It's the area of town I live in and I think it's nice and safe. South of town is nice too. From Manzanita Gate, driving to work shouldn't take much longer than 10 minutes. As far as living anywhere that's within walking distance...now that would be scary! I can't think of any neighborhood near the hospital I would want to live in.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions!
