Traveling nurses and L.O.A.s

U.S.A. Iowa

Published

Just a quick question for the Iowa folks. Have any of you tryed the traveling nurses programs? Perhaps to get a break from our great weather in Jan. and Feb. Does your hospital allow for a L.O.A.? Just exploring options. Thanks in advance for the input.

I cant imagine any hospital giving someone an LOA for that purpose, which implies they would hold your job for you...

You are going to find great difficulties in finding any facility that is going to give you a leave of absence and hold your position for you so that you can take a travel assignment for the winter months. More than likely, you will need to quit, and if the position is there when you return, then maybe they will rehire you.

This doesn't pertain just to your state, but for anyone that wishes to travel.

Specializes in ER, NICU, NSY and some other stuff.

I did once work in a facility that had a 10/2 program that would allow you to work 10 months and take 2 months off. Unfortunately that was before I discovered travel nursing.

First off, no my old hospital did not offer that type of program. However since becoming a traveler I have found some hospitals that do :). Check out your nursing mags for " Sunbird" positions esp in Arizona ( a compact state ). Good Luck.

Planning on taking my 1st travel assignment in August of this year.

Working in LTC at the finest facility available in the greater area.

Haven't sked yet but according to my employee handbook doubt very much that LOA would apply in this area.

Sooooooo, probably will need to quit but feel certain I would be hired back, may have to wait for "my job" to open again but would find a position elsewhere with-in.

Started my LPN career with this facility then moved to Chicago for 4 years. When I left I asked if they would hire me back if the Chicago thing didn't work out. They said "in a heart beat". 4 years later I moved back here and they hired me back immediatly. Had to wait a few months but got my "old job" back.
