Traveling and doing NP

Published

I wonder if I would burn myself out if I tried to do my PMHNP while travel nursing? Travel nursing as a med surg nurse FWIW...I would be doing an online program. I would want to go full-time, but I don't know if that is even doable. Anyone else done something like this? Thanks!

Absolutely not! I did it (MSN-FNP) and this is what I did.

1. I worked as a travel ICU RN staying in state within a 170 mile radius of the University and home.

2. I worked T,F,S night or F,S,S night this was very important! Why? It gave me structure and I was able to do clinicals the morning of Thursday if working Thursday night. If working Sunday night I went straight to clinicals on Monday. Yes, your sleep will suffer, but this was not a problem for me. I can go for days without it. Working the weekends was actually better for the hospital when I worked for American mobile.

3. Work nights and consecutive shifts. If your week is broken up with work you will fail the program.

4. You want to work weekends, you can ever get clinical days on the weekend. So don't waist the day. In addition I went to the University for class and for me it was either held on a Tuesday or Wednesday. It was one day a week for me.

5. Never break your schedule, don't procrastinate, don't miss a day, don't make excuses.

I had perfect attendance in my graduate program, but then again I achieve that when I was in the BSN program. Years earlier when in school and attained my duel Bachelor's in Sociology and Anthropology. But hat was because I achieved perfect attendance for 13 years kindergarten through 12th grade. I know, weird! right? This and 4 dollars will give me a cup of coffee at Starbucks. Anyhow wishing the best for you. You can do it. I even worked PRN for an agency near my home 3 to 6 times a month.

I finished my MSN ED last summer and am now attending an online PMHNP program. It does have on site intensives each semester during clinicals. It can be done.
