Traveling to new assignments

Published

Hi, I'm considering traveling as an ER nurse starting sometime in the end of 2015. Where I currently live and work it is absolutely necessary to have a car and my current one is a piece of crap. It probably won't make it til 2015, so I'm looking to buy a new one. My question to you is, do you take your car with you when you travel, and drive to each assignment? Or do you fly out and just try to use a bicycle/public transportation when you get there? I know car needs may vary depend on where you go, but I want to be able to travel anywhere in the continental US at a whim. What do you guys do?

I always take my car. Best way to bring my bicycle, skates, cooking stuff.

I've actually rented a car on my assignments bc they have been 8-10 weeks...On one particular assignment, I was close enough to ride my bike to the hospital but not every assignment will be like that..and on another, the company provided the transportation...that is very unusual, however.

I've always taken my car to each assignment…..For me, travel nursing wasn't about commuting back and forth to a hospital 3 days/week, and with that said, I needed reliable transportation to explore my surroundings without having to be at the mercy of public transport. When I decided to travel in 2010, I was in your position as well with an unreliable car-- I bought a brand new car and drove cross country from Georgia to California and have been here ever since.

Since you'd like to travel on a whim, you could always ship your car to your next destination, but you'd have to factor shipping costs. Or you could rent a car once you arrive to your travel destination, but the cost can sometimes be equivalent to owning a comparable brand new vehicle.
