travel nursing without a home?

Published

Is it possible to be a travel nurse without a home, and just have a mailing address? I assume the housing stipend would be less or none, but does anyone have any info on how that might work? I was picturing living in a van or RV. If a home address is required I would plan on just getting something very cheap.

Housing stipend should remain the same as would meals and incidentals and mileage. The difference is as an itinerant, all that compensation will be taxed. Insist on it, some agencies will be reluctant. If you can get a legitimate residence, say a house share, such a tax home is worth between $10,000 and $20,000 a year in tax savings. Bankable money less what you are paying to maintain your tax home. Do not simply use a family or friend's address. If you are audited, you will have to prove you paid rent or similar. In some distressed states, such as South Dakota, it is possible to pick up a habitable home for $10,000, which of course pays for itself in one year. Do check with a specialist such as TravelTax for a free consult if you are moving your tax home from where you live now.

Perfect. Thanks a bunch Ned, always helpful when it comes to travel nursing.
