Travel nursing for nervous drivers

Published

I'm from Manhattan and didn't get my license till I was almost 30. I now live in a small town in SC and have to drive every day but driving on highways or in big cities makes me nervous.

I feel like this may be a limiting factor in where I can go for travel nursing..

In theory would love to go to LA, San Diego, Phoenix, Houston but don't think I could handle driving there and they strike me as places you really NEED a car.

If I were to go to SF, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle, DC... I think I could get by fine with no car.

What are some good places to travel to where you don't need a car or where driving is easy?

Is it possible to do an assignment somewhere like LA, San Diego, Houston or Phoenix and get an apt walking distance to a hospital?

Specializes in ICU, and IR.

I am currently in Baltimore, I drive a big F350 dually so basically I park it and never drive once on my assignment...getting an RV down the road. I bring my bike and so far here I have taken the bus or metro everywhere. In fact Hopkins has a free shuttle that picks me up real close to my apartment. Just check out the transit routes before you settle on a place. You will be fine.

Let's take a complete left, would you ever consider attending a driving school? I don't think the typical driver's ed school would help much with your comfort level since it seems you know the basics, but it may. I really think a lower level "high performance" or "racing" school might really build your confidence and control level in the car improving your experience in most of the US. Perhaps getting behind the wheel of a typical street car in an assertive manner but controlled environment next to a professional coach would be a huge help?

I'm sure you can find a way to travel to Phoenix and live close to the hospital, but you would be cutting yourself short! I loved my time in Phoenix but I would have missed out on so much without the confidence to drive anywhere. For me the allure of travel is to spend every minute not working or sleeping exploring a new and exciting place.
