Travel with a mortgage?

Hey guys! I was just wondering if anybody travels with a house. I understand that travel nursing is so much money, but if you are paying a mortgage, do you really come out ahead?

If you do travel with a house, does somebody watch it for you? How do you keep it up?

Brandie

Hey there Brandie - I travel and have a house in my home state.

My mom is working on the maintenance bit for me and I have a nice neighbor, Rory, who picks up the mail for me every day, and mows when needed. (AND does not want money for the mowing.....)

I might have someone moving in to house sit for me - as long as they pay for the utilities. If you rent your house out, I guess you cannot count it as a tax base - to the best of my understanding.

Good luck to you.

Diary is right- if you rent your house out, you cannot use it as your "tax home," and will not qualify for tax-free housing & travel benefits. By having a mortgage, you can take advantage of a lot more tax-free benefits, and will be able to come out farther ahead financially. Your best bet is to find someone to take care of the property for you while you are away (either family, or hire someone to do it).

Check with a travel tax professional. I think I read on traveltax.com that you can rent out part of your home. Like if the lease said you were renting out one bedroom or whatever, but you're maintaining the rest of the home for YOUR living space, then it counts as a tax home. I could be wrong, but it'd be worth finding out for sure.
