Hi, I was wondering what it was like to be a travel nurse. I currently work in home health, but I am really interested in LEAVING. I am married with kids (pre-teens), but they are very willing to move with me. my husband is hoping we will find the right place to live by us traveling around & seeing new places. what do you guys think? is travel nursing to much to deal with if you have a family?

any advice would be grateful.......thanks.

I don't travel, but I would be hard pressed to drag preteens around the country. I guess it depends how long your contracts are for, but it would be hard to just uproot them every so often (I was a military child and moved aout once a year - adjusted fine to it, as did my brother, but my sister hated it and her schooling suffered greatly.) Just some thoughts. Good luck.

I've been travelling for 3 years with my husband and 2 children. My kids are now 16 and 12...were obviously 13 and 9 when we began...as long as your kids adapt well to change and can manage changing schools, it isn't a problem (or if you homeschool). My kids have been greatly enriched by the experience and have always had input into where we go and how long we stay. I say go for it

I have done travelling for about two years, and just recently took a job with home health. (I was an Ob nurse) My husband and children stayed home. I tried to get assignments within a 200 mile radius of home. I would work my three shifts, and then drive home and be with my family for a few days. I was always on the road. But if you have a supportive family it might be do-able. Just keep in mind that most contracts are for three months, and you dont know whether they will need you after that, so you might be moving often. Good Luck
