Travel Docs

Nurses General Nursing

We recently had a (travel) Doctor work in our er for over 2 months. It didnt take long to figure out why he was traveling. While interviewing pts - he would literally fall asleep sitting up. One day, we went to get a pt off of the medivac on the heliport - as we were walking up the ramp, he decides to start running and pushes the other nurse off of the heliport as he was passing by. We can laugh about it now, but it wasnt funny at the time. He never apologized to her - she had to have several stitches. He frequently ordered the wrong xrays (pt complains of pain to lt leg - he orders xray of shoulder)!! He would discharge pts from the er before getting any labwork back. We were sooo glad to see him go.

Another one of our travel docs is a woman with a very bad eating disorder. She kept food in her trunk. She would interview the pt and then disappear for 30 min while she went out to her car. IF we all chipped in and ordered pizza - she would literally take 5-6 pieces out to her car. Then, as if no one noticed, she would get 5-6 more. This would go on all day. She carried a huge duffle bag to the vending machine and fill it up with snacks. We could hardly get her to take care of the pts b/c she was so obsessed with food. Travel Doctors scare me.!!! :uhoh3:

I worked with a travel doctor in a unit in which I was a travel nurse. This doc was more on top of things and more up-to-date with current treatment modalities than either of the two "local" docs. Sounds like you've come across a couple of weirdos, but not all traveling medical professionals travel because they aren't competent to stay in one place. That goes for MDs, RNs, XR techs, everyone.

oh, i agree completely. i didnt mention the other travel doc - he was great and we hated to see him go. its more interesting to talk about the weird ones.
