Travel/Benefits/Family

So I would like to move back to NE Ohio where I am from and I thought the best way to do it would be to take a travel assignment there to get my foot in the door someplace. Do you get benefits when you are traveling? How does it work with a family?

There is very little advantage to moving to an area with a travel assignment. A decent chunk of travel compensation is usually tax-free benefits for which you will not be eligible for because you live there permanently. Your real pay will be higher as staff when you consider the good health insurance (often sucky for travel if available at all), sick pay, holiday and vacation pay, and educational benefits. Also, most staff jobs will pay moving expenses tax free if you are moving from more than 50 miles away. You will not get that if you are already there.

Travel pay in Ohio is usually very bad. Staff pay isn't great either. The Cleveland Clinic is big enough to exert some monopoly power and keeps pay down in the entire area. Plus Ohio is a bit dull - I can say that because I'm from there and live there. Things to think about before an expensive move.

There are so many jobs for experienced nurses here, why not just apply?
