Hi,
I am a new grad and I'm looking into the different specialties. I just wanted to have an idea of what trauma surgical nursing involves. I would appreciate any information. I tried to look in the different specialty boards but couldn't find anything. Maybe I'm not searching correctly???
Thanks for any help! :)

I work on a trauma unit, that's not critical care.
We take care of a wide variety of trauma, but primarily motor vehicle accidents. Lots of ortho injuries. Also things like gunshot wounds with internal injuries, adominal trauma, assaults and stabbings, pneumothoraxes, etc.
Are you looking at a unit on the floor, critical care, operating room, or the emergency room? The role of nursing is different in each scenerio.
Good luck.

Thanks so much for the info. I think I will change my my mind about Trauma. I can deal with guns shot wounds and stabbing but not with the MVA yet. I have a big fear of broken bones :) . Is there a trauma unit that involves critical care? Maybe that would be better.

If you fear broken bones, then trauma nursing is not for you.
Sure, many patients who are in traumas wind up in critical care units after their stay in the ER.
I like the patients, all patched up before I see them, then I help them get well. I wouldn't have the stomach to see fresh wounds or twisted up bones in the ER, I don't think.

So what you are saying is that they are patched up in the trauma surgical unit or you see them first hand, stabilize them and they go into OR if needed? Because if they are patched up such as bones are in cast, traction etc. Then I can care for them and I am not fearful at that point. It's the twisted, broken and mingled bones that I fear. When I see it the exact part that is mingled on that patient starts to hurt me as well :chuckle
Thank you so much. I am being offered something on Trauma and I want to make sure what I get into as new grad.
