Transitioning from an IC to having my own travel agency

Hey guys,

Previously I had a forum asking for information on how to become an IC opposed to traveling with an agency. I do believe by mid to late 2017 I will be in the proper financial place do so so. However, my long term goal is to eventually use that knowledge, experience, and relationships gained through owning my own company as an IC to become a travel agency with other nurses also working for my company. How big of a transition, if any, would be necessary in order to do so? Largely, I am asking from a business standpoint (I.e. Business entity, insurance, etc.).

Any and all questions, informations, and so on is welcomed and appreciated!

After one contract on my own, I hope to act like a "real travel agency" and get contracts for other nurses as well. Though I won't be a large entity for anytime in the foreseeable future, I do hope to get some nurses to want to work under contract with my company. So for this reason, I certainly want to remain an LLC. However, you feel it would be fine to operate in the immediate time without registering as a foreign LLC in other states?

You are not personally responsible for the actions of your travelers. You do not provide a workplace or supervise your employees. The LLC won't protect you. You need insurance.

My company is 99% ready to land contracts for myself and other nurses apart from the fact that I have not found a facility that does not utilize MSPs in either North Carolina or Ohio. I am currently in the application process of working with some MSPs but I was hoping you'd know other hospitals that you have landed contracts with that I could contact? As well as virtually any other successful, or potentially successful, ideas you have from your experience pertaining to this. If you do not want to list this information publicly, particularly if you list specific hospitals, please feel free to PM me. I cannot respond via PM but I can read messages. If you leave me your contact information as a PM to further discuss these options I would love to continue to pick your brain.

I've not done direct contracts in NC or OH so I can't be of help there.

Where have you had luck? I am open to going anywhere in the nation.

Well, I am signed up with multiple vendor managers. But really, they don't have a majority of hospitals in most states. Sometimes hospital associations have a lock on business in the state, for example SC Hospital association in SC and NC. AZ used to have a lock until they lost a price fixing lawsuit. Personally, I like working in high paying states. I've done a ton in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and California and still have direct contracts in those states. But really, good pay is just one benefit, I want to work in those places. Parts of NY, CT, NJ, RI pay well. You just need get your feet wet, find an open assignment at any hospital that doesn't have a VM and work your plan.
