Transition from IMCU/Tele to Med/Surg

Published

I am going to start traveling, and there is an attractive offer to do Med/surg, but all my experience is in intermediate care (IMCU)/Tele for 3 years. Is it totally different or will I be fine?

What ratios are you used to?

Make sure to ask about usual ratios first. Not because I don't think you'd be able to handle it but because some places are unsafe. When I was applying for jobs I came across one hospital that had 6-7 patients @ night. I'm sure you or I would be able to rise to the occasion but why put yourself in that situation if you don't have too.

Just at my hospital progressive, stepdown, pins, tele go from 3 assessments and 3 sets of vitals to 2 assessments and 1 set of vitals on medsurg.

I'm not too concerned about ratios because having 4-5 IMCU patients was overkill for my unit. I am more concerned about the type of patients i'll be taking care of. I didn't take care of a lot of post-op surgical patients; mostly dying people.
