After nursing school I moved from Erie to St. Louis, MO. I realized I was too far away from family, etc. at holidays and whatnot. So, I am moving back to Pittsburgh, and have a job at Passavant. I am totally happy with the decision and excited about moving back closer to loved ones. All that having been said, I am currently working at a large hospital and I work on a thoracic sugery floor (that treats paitents who have a very high acuity). So my question is, how difficult is it to transfer from one UPMC hospital to another (such as Presby)?
Thanks so much for your answers!

I just got a job at UPMC Montefiore (technically Presby I guess). Congrats to you!
I asked and they said they like you to work a year before transferring. What you would do is apply at upmc.com as an internal applicant and if you get the job, you basically just switch to that department.

Hi,
Congrats on your new job. The answer is pretty much what the last poster said, with a small exception... Even if you work a year at Passavant, your nurse manager can "hold" the transfer for some time due to "staffing issues." I was told up to 3 months, but I haven't found that in the book yet.
Good luck with the job, and welcome back!

I have been a UPMC employee for over 2 years. The official UPMC policy is that you can transfer positions after holding your first UPMC job for one year. After that, you can transfer again after 6 months at your second postion. UPMC has a large listing of internal listings available, which I've noticed often have more job opportunities than the external ads. I successfully transferred after my first year with UPMC. :)

Yes, you can be "held," but according to UPMC policy, you can only be held for a maximum of one month. Any manager that tries to hold longer is in violation of policy.
