Wow. I haven't visited Allnurses in quite a while. This site helped me tremendously when I was a new grad and then again when I transferred from Med Surg to ICU. I don't frequent allnurses much anymore because I am married with a toddler who takes up most of my free time. I'm fine with that of course. My name is Laurie and I have been an RN for 8 years. The last 4 years I spent in a med/surg ICU. When I was in school I had dreams of being a NICU nurse and it just never happened. I enjoyed working with adult medical patients at first but in all honesty I ended up getting very burnt out. Not only with my noncompliant medical population but the way my old ICU unit was managed. It was extremely cliquey and some staff got a way with completely inappropriate behavior.

Long story short... I had a child.. became very interested in the baby friendly/pro breastfeeding movement. I became very involved in La Leche League and curious about becoming a lactation consultant. I love critical care and I am not ready to leave the bedside so I applied for a position in a level II nursery at my current hospital. They hired me and a I start Monday. I'm very excited and looking forward to my first day. I need some resources so I can study. I know babies are completely different than adults and I need to learn all I can about them.

Can anyone help me out with some good books I can get?

Thanks

Laurie

Here are a few....That I own that I highly recommend..

The bible so to speak is

"Merenstein & Gardner's Handbook of Neonatal Intensive Care" another is

"Core Curriculum for Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing"

Both are invaluable resources. You unit will most likely have some copies laying around.. Also I just picked up "Innovations in neonatal-perinatal medicine"

Also you should join NANN National association of Neonatal nurses, they put out a great journal that you will have online access to once you join. Hope this helps
