Hi everyone I have just successfully passed the RPN exam in ontario, as an international registered nurse from the UK I have 12 years emergency experience with extended skills like ALS certification, male/female catheterization, casting IV/medication administration etc . What I would like to know is whether any of these skills are transferable to Canada with maybe on job assessment. Any advice greatly appreciated .

Catheterization of both sexes is a basic skill that all nurses are taught in school be they RNs or PNs.
IV starts and med administration are also considered basic skills in my province.
My hospital requires all new hires to have three witnessed IV starts by a CNE and then you are good to go.
If you are unsure of your cathing skills, you just ask your buddy during orientation to find you all of the patients that need cathing and do it with them standing by.
Casts are looked after by Ortho Techs which are PNs with post grad education in orthopedics
Thank you very much for your reply ? ...I have just registered as RPN but do I need to gain a medication administration certificate aswell as I know this is included as part of the RPN diploma and I have a UK 3yr diploma ...Most requesting for RPNs ask if you can do this or have the certificate but I'm not sure whether to answer Yes or No . I've been told by someone that as long as I've passed the RPN exam then I'm covered for medication administration aswell ...Thanks in advance
The education of PNs in Ontario includes med administration (it's a basic). Back about 20 years ago, it was a separate certificate. Med administration is part of the exam content. I think these may be very old, unchanged job postings. Call the provincial College for clarification.
Thank you I really appreciate your reply
