Apply to several O.R.'s. Many will train you.

Here's the AORN website....

I am interested in working in the OR.

I have checked AORN's website for Periop 101

I could not find any hospitals for New York or New Jersey to do the course Periop 101.

If anyone has more information please share.

Thanks

Just apply for jobs at all local hospitals at which you are willing to work. One of them may be willing to train you on the job. If you insist on getting some training before you apply, consider signing up for a surgical technologist program. I guarantee you that an RN with surg tech training will have an easy time getting a job as an O.R. R.N.

Another idea is to get ANY type of job at a local operating room just to get your foot in the door.

or any "Out-patient" surgical clinics maybe...

i heard one of my co-worker's friend works at this type of OR clinics.

the advantage: just working from morning till afternoon, no weekend duties.. :D

but i still think there is no substitute for the real OR.. consider all the benefits you get... suddenly getting a call from the ER that a trauma patient will be up in a few minutes.. or getting a call from the CCU that a patient is for Emergency OR.. receiving this call while you only have a few minutes to prepare and you still have to prepare the patient for post-op.. :D or while your just about to take your first bite off your meal... :D nice isnt it?!

One thing that sucks about surgery centers is that they have a lot of quick cases, which means many turnovers during a shift, which means a lot of running around.

Specializes in 2 years school nurse, 15 in the OR!.

I worked in a surgery center for a few years. A lot of small repetetive cases...I got so sick of bunions, I wanted to vomit...LOL

Having said that, the cases we did, it would have been simple to train a OR nurse. We were working on training a PACU nurse when I was there. Another idea...I got to the OR by going to the PACU first. We didn't have a internship and I just let the director know how bad I wanted to go to the OR. She started having me spend a day or two a week with a circulator until they actually got Perioperative 101.

The OR's in hospitals are much more exciting. Yes, call stinks...however, I love the excitement of a main OR over a surgery center.

Good luck!

exactly! 4am christmas day (today)...we got a call from the ER of a single stab wound that have his intestines eviscerated...that was when we were about to take a nap for we have just finished doing "E" C-section... :D in less than 5 minutes the patient was already at our OR table! i havent even prepared all my stuffs LOL..

i agree that surgical centers tend to make work stagnant.. :D but as a stepping stone to OR?...maybe...?

Merry Christmas everyone!
