Too personal to mention in the interview??

Nursing Students SRNA

Need advise about a personal topic. I had a son born with a heart defect that died waiting for a heart transplant 9 years ago.:crying2: Prior to that I was going to be a veterinarian. It was because of my experience in the NICU that I went into nursing after his death. I have noticed in a lot of posts to stay AWAY from personal stuff in the interview....however he is the whole reason I am in nursing and it also explains why I have such heavy sciences with many animal science courses....my anatomy and phy was not on humans....it was on domestic animals. So how should I approach the interview?? I have worked in the NICU for 6 years with ECMO and heart transplant and currently I am a flight nurse. Any info would greatly be appreciated. ;)

Staying away from "personal stuff" in an interview usually means keeping the focus on professional matters. Because your son's death (and his brief life in the NICU) gave you much of your motivation to pursue a nursing career, you were able to turn personal circumstances into professional accomplishment, and that is certainly worthy of mention.

This information not only speaks about your reasons for becoming a nurse, it also gives a prospective employer some assurance that you will be able to connect with your patients and their families and offer an empathetic connection because you have been where they are now.

I'm so glad you were able to redeem something good from the loss of your son. It sounds like you have much to offer.

I agree. Because the event defined you professionally, it is worthy of mention. It also lets the ADCOM know your heart and soul are truly in this endeavor.

Btw. I speak from experience. I also lost my son and my experiences with him are why I went into nursing and am now in anesth. school.

Hi SuperSleeper

Just wanted to say thank you and it is nice to meet someone with a similar experience....and know that if I chose to bring up Hunter it wont destroy my chances....breaks my heart I have to think in those terms. :( Guess I was confused after reading all these posts.
