Too old to become an LNA?

U.S.A. New Hampshire

I am seriously considering taking the LNA training but am a little worried because of my age - I am 57. Do you think I am too old for a career change? I am already volunteering at a hospital and love it. Any input would be really appreciated.

You remind me of a question once posed after this statement......If I take this path, I will be 50 when I graduate with this degree. Response was...How old will you be if you do not go to school?

You are not to old....pursue your dreams! Good luck!

:yeah:Never too old to learn, go for it, just finished my RN, many yrs as an lpn, the sky is the limit, You can teach an old dog new tricks

did not read all the post-but some and I agree with-you are never to old.

Your health on the other hand at any age needs to be considered. Nursing homes

r busy placesespecially on a 3-11 shift. 1 nurse to 25-35 is alot. I worked a shift like

that last night. 1-dying resident 1-unresponsive resident. I never went to the BR.

I'm in gd health and exercise everyday and I'm very glad that is my PD job I do twice

a month-and that's it. Many other thing one can do. I'm just happy after 20 yrs my

real job is in a hospital.

:nurse:I'm 60 years old and going to school. I'm in the ADN program, if I can do it you can too.

Dear to Old,

You are never too old to do what you have a passion for. I was 56 yrs old and got my GED, 57 yrs old and working full time on 3rd shift as an aide on a Med/Surg unit in a local hospital. I applied at that time to Knoedler LPN School and was accepted and started at age 58. Still working 40 hrs a week on 3rd I attended school 40 hours a week on days, changing clothes at the hospital to get to school on time. Graduated LPN school at 58 and worked as an LPN at the same hospital that I was and aide at for a while. I have been working at a long-term facility for @ 2 years now and loveeeeeee it. I went on last year to get my IV certification and am now starting RN School and looking into a wound care class, I will be 62 this summer. If I can do it anyone can. If you have a passion in your heart to help others, go for it. You will never regret it.

Good Luck, Joyce Ross LPN M IV

I am 56 and just received my RN license. The first few 12 hour shifts made me realize that nursing is physically demanding, but just doing the job has helped me lose weight and get back into shape. As far as setbacks go, I had to repeat college algebra 3 times, setting me back a year, before I got into the nursing program, but I finally made it. I've never had any problems with dosage calculations, just those graphs! I'm working in orthopedics as a new RN and I love every minute that I'm not terrified Older people than you or I are doing it, so just keep chugging along. The world needs nurses!

:yeah:

:)Thank you all for your very encouraging words. I am a bit nervous and definitely excited to be embarking on a new path. I never thought I would be doing this at this time in my life but I feel such a strong call to do this and I have had nothing but encouragement from the first day I talked about it. It is wonderful to hear all of your stories.
