Today's job numbers

Published

Today the government released it's job numbers for the month of May and buried beneath the bad headline number was this fact: healthcare added a mere 8,000 jobs in the month of May. I don't know the breakdown of how many were RN's, or CNA's, etc, but it is a very weak number and seems consistent with the posts on here where folks are saying they are still having problems finding work as new grads.

Neverminding that it may not even be 8,000 nursing jobs they're talking about: it could mean 8,000 jobs of any position so long as it's in the field of healthcare :(

In a totally facebook inspired moment, I read this and instantly thought 'dislike'.

And now with the BP oil spill and me living in FL I'm expecting things to just get worse. Oh and it didn't help that the DOW dropped over 300 points today after the job numbers were released. The economy isn't doing as well as hoped.

I'm seriously having second thoughts on doing LPN-RN this fall. I'm working as an LPN and I sure don't want to bother going on to RN if I'm not going to land a job right away.

I'm too old for this ****.

I don't know if it's worth it either. I may have a chance to go to a cheaper school but I am really having second thoughts on if it is worth it. The first reply is exactly what I was getting at - you can almost be guaranteed that they are not all RN positions. More bad news.

We need to look at the big picture ... a slow increase today is not an indication of the future ... after we go from LPN to RN. The so called "baby boomers" are working well into their retirement years, but the tide WILL turn and they will reture AND need care themselves. If we don't take advantage now and go for our RN, we might miss the boat when the huge opportunity presents itself. I was at a job fair and the HR folks said they are good now, but scared for the future because of the opening that they can see in the near future ....

Stay the course from LPN to RN and you'll be so glad you did. I know I could use the huge increase I'll get when I graduate.
