To work for Veterans Administration.........

I am putting some feelers out and was wondering what it is like to work for the Veterans Administration.

I am an LPN. I appreciate all what vets have done and are currently doing for us. I know the government

offers good benefits as well. Is there a big demand for LPN's at the VA?

Is the work environment tolerable? (yes, I know it will vary greatly)

any info anyone can give is greatly appreciated!

What I have found is that the benefits aren't nearly as good now as they used to be and if I understand it correctly they don't do the federal retirement pension any more it is set up more like a 401k. No short term disability and the pay is definitey on the low end of the area. At least thats how it is where I am.

It is my understanding that LVN's are only used in the "module" areas of the hospital.

Most hospitals consist of 5 modules for Veteran's rated at various disability statuses - the LVN's handle all vitals for appointments.

For example I'm part of Module A at my VA, there are probably 6 LVN's on duty at any given time there.

They only operate Monday-Thursday.

Do the math, and that's not a lot of LVN employees. They also only operate from I believe 7 AM to 5 PM - so probably 12 hour shifts in the end.

I would call the local VA and ask HR personally. They're a lot more structured and organized at VA hospitals.
