Hey, all. My career goal overall is to be a nursing educator....and I was thinking about going back to my CC (I graduated in May of 08) as a nursing tutor or advisor...I was going to go to the dean, and ask about being a tutor, as I know the skills and what the instructors want..I can study the skills check off book for what an instructor would want, and students may be more likely to approach someone who was in their shoes not that long ago. Plus it may be a good stepping stone into the education field....any advice?

I have no advice but I think that is the best idea ever! I would have loved to have someone like you in school when I was going. Hope it works out!

Our program has a grant that funds peer tutors. They are paid $15 an hour. I would strongly urge you not to work for free, as you have a marketable skill and nursing experience on top of that which would qualify you as a highly qualified tutor. If a student with no nursing experience can make $15 an hour, an experienced RN should command the same or better. It really depends on what the market will support in your area.
Also, we tried offering students $10 and hour to tutor and got no one interested, so we had to up the rate to $15 an hour.
As an educator, I applaud that you would liek to be a nurse educator! This is a good way to get your feet wet and explore avenues that you might be interested in. If I can help you at all, please let me know. Good luck!
