Tips for succeeding?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello everyone! This is my first post. I am currently a nursing major at a very popular university in PA. I just wrapped up my first yr. Sadly,I am not doing as well as I hoped. My school requires an overall 3.0 and I'm around the 2.7 range. I took my first science pre req this semester(Microbio) and finshed with a C+(80). Very disappointing.I would do terrible on tests. I study, take notes, and even attend another class (teacher has two seperate lectures back to back). I currently work around 25 hrs a wk.I know this is alot but I have no other support system as far a finances go. Over the summer I plan on getting my cna license to get used to working in a hospital setting. It pains me to realize that Im so close yet so far! My advisor recommended changing my major, but this has been my dream for the longest and I dont want to give up.There are people with 3.5 and above doing the same things as me(am I missing something?!) I know next yr will be even more challenging as far as courseload is concerned. Does anyone have any tips or advice for why I'm not making the grade requirements? I was considering transferring, maybe for a better chance and fresh start...

If this is what you want to do, and its always been your dream, dont let that one class discorage you, you still have time to bring up that GPA, and make it to a nursing school, even if its not the school you are currently attending. Just take your prerequisits and next time just study a little harder, if you can. Sometimes you may have to reread a specific topic. I also took microbiology and it was very challenging, i received an A- which was very shocking to me since i was expecting a B+. I was constantly in the books, somethime rewriting notes, did some study group with 2 other students. Im not to fond of large study groups, so we all did very well. There is also some practice test, and exams online you can practice with those resources, most of them are similar questions to the exams you will be given in class. But never let anything or anyone discourage you from what you want to do, you just have to be more determined and you will make it through, take it from me, i know what you are talking about, and i made it into the nursing program for this coming fall. I have more challenges and obsticles to complete before i get to the final goal. So good luck in your future endevers

I'm a fellow student, so I feel your pain. Working hard for good grades takes a lot out of you. That said, there is no substitute for a 4.0GPA. Nursing schools are very competitive right now. They have to use something to screen applicants. For some, it's GPA. For others, it's a previous educational goal. A B in micro can tank you, and that's just how it goes.

I wish there was another way to prove yourself. Medical school (MD) is easier to get into than nursing school is. Medical school has a 50% acceptance rate, and nursing school commonly has less than 10% acceptance.

Good luck.

You are doing great, Best of luck
