I am currently a senior in BSN school in the Midwest - graduating in May. I have psychiatric experience in terms of research and clinical work (summer externship, senior capstone clinical). I am really interested in moving to Austin and working in outpatient psychiatry. Do you have any advice on where to start looking?
Thanks!

There are some inpatient jobs available, but you'll probably be looking for at least a little while. I'm not aware of any outpatient nursing jobs in psyche in the area.
What about psych clinics that may be hiring in the future for me to keep an eye on their website? Or other part-time RN jobs in general? I will be attending graduate school and would like to find a way to work about 20 hours a week (more during the summer and less during academic semesters). Thank you!
I'm in a similar situation, working on my msn and working PRN for a residential psych hospital. And I didn't mean to say that outpatient opportunities don't exist, they might, I just didn't run across any while I was hunting for a job. There are quite a few med surg positions, I have a couple friends who work for outpatient places that deal with MR that often has some psyche components to it, don't remember the details.
There's work if you're willing to get your resume out there and really look, but wages tend to be lower due to a saturation of nurses in Austin(St Phillip's, ACC, and UT making new nurses every year). If you do decide to consider inpatient psyche, your job hunt will be easier and you'll make $2-5/hr above average pay starting out, more with experience.
Hi Jlm, thank you for the comment. I would definitely consider inpatient psych or outpatient medical in general. However my experience has prepared me better for something in more of a psych role. What institutions would you suggest to keep an eye on for positions? And when do local hospitals/clinics start hiring May grads? I will be starting graduate school about August 25th and ideally would like a position that starts a couple weeks before then.
Also, can I ask where you are a PMHNP student? I wonder if it's the same program that I'll be attending. Or if you would PM me if you feel more comfortable, that would be great. Thanks!
No problem, pm sent
