I sat the State Exam in July of this year. There are two exams, both are 1 hour and 30 minutes long. There is a range of questions covering all different topics in both exams, including legislation, safety, pathophysiology, medications (these were very simple), nursing considerations etc.

Usually they would have a little blurb at the beginning to explain a certain topic or patient and then there would be a number of questions asked related to that topic. I did find a lot of the questions were quite topical according to what health concerns are prevalent in New Zealand at the time, for example we had a big section on Tuberculosis. There were a lot of maternity questions and mental health questions. It is hard to give an example of the questions asked and to be honest even though I only sat it a few months ago I don't really remember the exact questions.

The most important thing to remember is that you are answering the question from a nurses perspective, always look at what answer is the best answer from those listed. I found that the mock exams given to us to practice were the most helpful and the exams were exactly like these. We asked our lecturers for as many practice exams as possible and then went over the exams and how each question is answered. I also found that the Nclex practice questions helped, especially getting your head around how they ask the questions.

I am sitting state on the 20th of November 2012 and am really confused as to what study for it....-Are there heaps of questions on legislations? And what sort of acts? One of the past exams had soo many it did my head in.-someone told us not to worry too much about pathophysiology. Is that a good idea?- what sort of questions do they ask on maternity?- but mostly what type of questions do they ask in general? Any patterns that anyone has noticed?Any tips will be greatly appreciated guys.....thanks!
