timeout ???

Our hospital uses the universal protocol time outs. We still have several drs who treat it as staffs delaying cases, others get upset to just turn down the music or anesthesiologist who won't hang up the phone to verify the information from the wrist band.

Does anyone else have these issues? How do you/your hospital deal with this? Does any one use 2 time-out pre-prep, pre-cut?

We have an anesthesia timeout (name, dob, procedure, anesthesia type) and a precut timeout that is more extensive (name, dob, procedure, allergies, antibiotics, meds on table, implants available). The docs have learned that the more they protest, the longer the delay, so most of them have gotten into the habit.

My OR has a zero tolerarnce policy regarding physicians and other staff who don't take the time out seriously. Surgeons have been warned that if they give any grief over the policy, refuse to participate, etc that their privileges may be revoked for a time.

So, we really don't have problems with the time outs anymore..:D

Thanks, I wish staff had more support in protecting our pts right/health, but drs say I'll take my cases elsewhere and management backs down. It happens anytime we have staff vs Dr, we lose.
