Time off in between jobs?

How bad is it to have a break in between jobs? 

Did anyone successfully take 6 months-ish off and was able to still find work? How big of a deal was the time off to the next employer?

    I'm wondering this too, and I'll be watching for replies. My current job is both exhausting and emotionally draining, so I need to leave fairly soon.  Fortunately my family would be OK without my income for a while. I could finish my BSN in 2-3 semesters, so it would be 6-9 months.
