Hello everyone, iam entering my senior year undergrad (grad. May 11') and wondering when i am able to apply to CRNA school. Over my last free summer, iam shadowing a CRNA and also in the ICU for a nursing externship. The CRNA's that i have met all tell me that i should be applying now considering it is very competitive but i feel that it is way too early. I was thinking of applying after a few months at my first job. I am interested in staying in PA, specifically in Philadelphia. Will schools even allow someone to apply 3-4 years in advanced for school? Thanks

Well you are on the right track and keep up the motivation. However, your journey has just begun. 1st you have to get a secure position in an ICU as an intern with the intentions of being hired as an RN. 2nd I would start studying for the GRE once you graduate, after the NCLEX of course. 3rd you should start researching some schools that you would like to attend on the AANA website. I would start writing about your shadowing experience now , while its fresh on your head and start getting recommendations as well. Seems like alot, but trust me when the time comes for you to apply, which won't be untill you have atleast one year of ICU under you belt, and of course the CCRN, you will recall all of this. I could spend all night on this subject. I hope this helps. I wish you well.

No, you can't apply in advance. 1. Get ICU job 2. Take GRE 3. While you wait for experience to accrue, get certifications like CCRN and take Grad courses to beef up that resume 4. Apply after at least 1 year experience and pray you get in.

Hello Not Murse-
Almost all school CRNA programs require 1-2 years of critical care experience and yes the process for admission to these programs is very competative. So I think that applying before graduation may not serve you well. In your area there are a number of programs. The American Association of Nurse Anesthetist has link on becoming a CRNA and a link to accredited programs by state. From there you canlook at admissions standards and deadlines. Good Luck!

I did not know you could send year old recommendation letters, I thought it had to be current
foxyhill21- Where did you see that you can send old rec's.?
ucann:From what you write above, I implied you can have people write recommendation letters now and apply later
Foxyhill- Recommendations are best if its within the same year you are trying to apply. Some schools specify who they want you you get them from. I stand corrected on the point.
