Those in California...UC or CS school?

I am torn between a California State School (Fullerton) or a University of California School (Irvine) for my BSN. Please do not preach to me about CS costing much less as that is not my issue, I am willing to pay for a better education. Have any others looking into either school? If so, what were your likes and/or dislikes?

All I can say about California is...evaluate the schools on their own merit, decide by speaking to alumni, faculty, etc. (not possible with UCI as they are just beginning their program) and apply to those programs you would consider attending if offered the opportunity.

Nursing programs are so impacted in California that the the mindset becomes, "apply almost everywhere and go where you can get in." Which is why I chose to attend a private school out of state. I did attend an information session for CSU Fullerton and they seemed to have a good vibe, well equipped labs/resources, competent faculty and as such, admissions for their programs gets more competitive with each round of apps.

UC or CSU, either way I would still be of the opinion that the tuition rates of either still offer a bargain of an education to California residents.

I don't know if you have already applied/been accepted to these schools, and if you have, I would say do your research and find out which has the better reputation. The person above said that UCI has a new nursing program which could either mean that it will be less developed and organized than a program that has been around longer, or it could potentially be very high quality, the first is more common though.

If you haven't already been accepted here is my advice.

Look at the prerequisites - which ones are you applicable for, many programs have different requirements.

Don't limit yourself to these two schools and by all means, do not apply to only one. Apply to as many schools as you meet the requirements for, even if you are not very interested in it. Better acceptance to a strange school than no school at all.

If location is the issue (like if you have a family and cannot move), there are many other schools in the so cal area (i just toured like, 5 of them this summer).

You want to have the best chances of getting in as possible, no one is guaranteed in, even with a 4.0 (though that helps).

Good Luck.

I have been leaning toward UCI due to I hold a B.S. with a UC school so I am guaranteed to get in. Cal. State Fullerton does not have a waiting list so that is not a problem either and the pre-reqs are not a problems for either as I am qualified for both. I am just retaking my AP, Chem and some Math because I have not been in school for almost 20 years so I really need to brush up on the important stuff.

I was looking at a Private school, Loma Linda University however, the application process is gruling... I would even have to compose an essay as to why I should be accepted to their school with three prestigeous references...blah, blah, blah, blah, blah! Loma Linda is my dream school but I am intimidated by them...lol!

Fullerton used to be affiliated with UCI for a number of years. Basically Fullerton ran their FNP program, so I'm betting you should look at your long term goals. Are you considering a BS - MSN program? Then what do you want your MSN in? Fullerton has Education, school nurse, & administration. You'll need to look up Irvine.

Personal experience: Fullerton has a very supportive faculty. they really treat you like an adult learner who has a life besides school. People in the program come from all walks of life/socio economic backgrounds/experiences which gives for a good class environment. You will learn a lot about yourself. Also well respected in California Public Health Departments.
