This is why I could never/never want to be an MD...

I have a family member who is a physician. I admire the heck out of the rigor and quality of their training requirements. So this is in no way an MD bash. This is more of a "one more reason why I became an NP" instead of an MD. I love what I do, but I'm pretty sure I don't love it enough to endure this kind of heartache:

I go in to work, see patients all day and come home by 6:30 at the latest. If I were working full-time I would make the equivalent of 105K and I don't think that is too bad considering I don't touch ANY work all weekend, don't take call , don't stay up all night taking care of patients AND I get to see my family.

So for all of you (especially women from age 22 and up) are wrestling with yourself trying to figure out if you want to go to medical school or if you want to continue down the NP path, you need to truly find in yourself how passionate you are about the physician role because you give up a LOT along the way.

I know! It sounds truly horrible. I know Moms all over the country have to make decisions to leave their babies/children in daycare , etc. to go back to work and I am NOT bashing that. Heaven knows my kid has spent time in daycare and I have to say I enjoy working. But I would NOT enjoy q 3 day 30 hour call for almost a year when I had an infant at home.

And it never really ends. It is pretty disgraceful that medical education abuses the students and calls it some rite of passage, the but 100+ hour work weeks only turn into 80+ hour work weeks. No, no med school for me.
